South Africa: Unknown pretty orange mushroom

Found this pretty mushroom type growing twice now in the same spot.
Both sightings have been around the same time of year (March '07 - May '08).
Grows off moist tree trunk next to river in a small ravine. Indigenous part of forest so not too close to pines.
Sorry no pic of the underside.
Thanks.

They could be a Gymnopilus species, but it would be helpful if you had more details and picked some to do spore prints, description of the underside, etc. To rule out out other possibilities/narrow it down more. I'm not even too sure about it, being from Africa... I have no experience what so ever identifying african mushrooms.

Hi eris, thanks for the reply.
Does look similar to some of the Gymnopilus species.
Will keep my eyes peeled for some more so I can get some prints.

Yea probably Gymnopilus.
Check for green stains and a bitter taste.

Who says the west coast gyms are weak?
These were stronger than cubes, gram for gram. They were bioassayed after being dry for about 4 months.
You can the see the bluing on the edges of the caps on the top left and bottom right. The cap on the bottom left also has ALOT of green spots on the cap as do the dry aborted pins.
Also the following Gymnopilus species are known from Africa: Gymnopilus aureobrunneus Gymnopilus brunneoaureus Gymnopilus chrysopellus Gymnopilus pampeanus Gymnopilus sapineus Gymnopilus zenkeri

Actually you are right in a sense. Gymnopilus junonius collections from the west coast are often in active to slightly active while east coast collections are usually moderately active.
My mushrooms were luteofolius.
