South Africa: Amanita muscaria or look-alike?
    #8510733 - 06/11/08 10:28 AM (15 years, 9 months ago)

This is the red Amanita that grows in our forests.

Is it Fly Agaric, or another Amanita variant?

I am almost sure it is A. muscaria, only thing is that I havent seen any as deep in the colour red as muscarias on the Internet.

Thanks.

I know there are other Amanita species with red caps besides muscaria, but yours do look like muscaria for the most part. One of the important features to ID muscaria is the concentric rings at the stem base. They do wear away in most specimens and are hardly visible after time. I think I do see the rings in a couple of your specimens.
The cap color and other features are highly variable, so those alone aren't really the most reliable.

Thanks for the info eris, I will look out for concentric rings at the stem base when I come into contact with some more Fly Agarics.

Be sure to fully dry the mushroom, or cook or boil into tea before ingesting.  This converts most of the ibotenic acid into mucimol.

Yeah, I've read that drying them decreases the change of nausea and vomiting.

I think we'll just put them in the oven for a while on a low heat.

In the trip reports I've read, most of the people take around 5g dried mushrooms each. Would drying them in the oven on a low heat mean you wouldn't need to eat as much since most of the ibotenic acid gets converted into mucimol?

The correct temp is about 190 degrees for conversion.

So then a low heat wouldn't work.

Any info/links for me to find out more about cooking A. muscaria at 190'?

Is that 'F or 'C?

You can make a tea easily enough.
Dry them in the sun first, just simmer for 15 minutes or so at 190 f. A candy thermometer works well.
also water boils at 212 f.
13 grams dried is a moderate dose.

The effects seem to vary geographically speaking..
I have heard that african strains of muscaria are not effective, but who knows.

Thanks warriorsoul, I'll do that.

Found a few Fly Agarics today and saw that they do have the concentric rings at the base of the stem.

Let's hope they're effective.
