Oysters and Monotubs

I know every kind of mushroom has certain types of substrates it prefers to grow on , but what about the spawn ? For most spawns can I use whatever I feel like before I transfer to the substrate ? For example , if I were growing oysters and was eventually going to transfer to newspaper , boxes , etc. would it matter what I spawned it on first ?
Also a few questions on growing oysters. I have seen monotubs with tons of holes drilled in them all over and nothing covering the holes , and I have also seen several with only 4 big holes in them and a filter over the holes . Which of those would be best for oysters ? Also, if I'm using perlite in a monotub, should I have holes drilled in the bottom for excess water drainage ?
Ive never done a batch of shrooms before and am going to do my first one with phoenix oysters cuz I hear they are easy to grow for first timers . Ive got a 24 qt pressure cooker coming in the mail tomorrow , ordered a phoenix oyster culture syringe from sporeworks.com and also an agar culturing kit from them for whenever I need it. Going to upgrade my lighting this weekend as well . Any advice on which teks to use to get oysters going would be appreciated.
One last question ... for monotubs in general , is it better to use perlite or better to use casings , and which should I use for the oysters ? Sorry for so many questions !
I got RRs DVD in the mail yesterday and watched it all the way thru. GREAT video , I just need to learn how to tie it all together and when to use what for what .

Hey there! I love your pic btw.
First of all, you seem to have a few of your terms mixed up. A monotub is basically a big casing (most often spawned to bulk first) which fills the entire bottom of the tub. These are the ones that have 4 or 8 big holes stuffed with polyfill. The concept is that the humidity stays the same inside, while the CO2 is pushed out of the bottom holes and fresh air comes in the top holes. Those are basically set and forget.
The other kind you're talking about is RR's shotgun FC (fruiting chamber). For this kind of FC you want to use perlite at the bottom, and all those little holes make the air move through the chamber giving it more FAE. Oysters looooove FAE, if there is much CO2 build up at all they'll grow very small. For oysters I would recommend the shotgun FC if you want to grow it in a FC, but ideally you would want to grow them in an environment where they can get more fresh air.
So any fruiting involving trays, cakes, or blocks you'll want to use a FC (like the shotgun), a martha closet, or a tent and use some kind of humidification (like perlite). Otherwise you can use the monotubs or double tubs. However, oysters grow best as blocks or something similar.
Hope this helps clear up some stuff.. Good luck with your grow!

o... and spawn doesn't really matter much since most of the nutrition will come from the substrate that you spawn onto.

to answer your question, it wont work.
oysters need TONS of fresh air exchange and this simply does not happen in a monotub.

Thanx much all for the clarifications and info
What's the best kind of FC to use for oysters indoors ? Could you use a laundry basket indoors ?

you can use ANY type of fruiting setup (which the laundry basket is) if you can maange to keep up RH and AIR EXCHANGE.
fruiting oysters outdoors seems to much less hassle.
i can see an automated setup like a martha stewart closet with pretty permanent air exchange to work.

Well... the nice thing about oysters is that they're very forgiving... so they will fruit under less than ideal conditions... they just won't be as big and nice... Here's what happened to my extra jar of spawn.
and that's growing in this chamber
(yeah... i know it looks like a double tub... one of these day's that's what it'll turn into)

i know this is an old thread but i was actually searching for shotgun fruiting chamber threads. this one came up in the search and i was looking to see if anyone was trying this out.
they will fruit in one. they don't fruit well, but they will fruit. recently ive been leaving the holes open in these tubs on the top holes. leaving the bottoms filled with the polyfil. they do need more air exchange. i find they initially fruit well then kinda stall out when the fruits get to a more mature point. but i got a good couple meals out of it for a leftovers experiment. didn't have enough cubie spawn when i mixed my two tub batch so spawned with oysters to fill the gap.
im going to try this again only this time im going to directly mist the fruits and substrate quite often. the tub ended up drying out before the full harvest. did better after a dunk. ive been doing open air bags now, directly misting the fruits with good results. but this was my first half ass try at pinks. they didn't do well but i was lazy and kinda threw it together last minute. still got a small meal out of it. it was dung/coir 50/50. no casing.
so single tub, 1.5" diameter polyfil holes with 3 on the long side, and 1 on each short side at the top. the holes are jogged on the longer side. one on top, 2 on bottom.
here is the open air bags. this is a substrate of newspaper/coir/coffee with some supplements in it.
