Making tea - discard the solids?
    #8506408 - 06/10/08 06:30 AM (15 years, 10 months ago)

So I've read multiple posts saying that the stomach upset caused by consuming mushrooms is the result of your body struggling to digest the (unfamiliar) mushroom material. So it seems that by soaking mushroom powder in a liquid (like juice, or making tea) I could strain out the solids and thus have a smoother trip. So my questions are:

1. How much psilocybin is extracted into the water by soaking for several minutes? If it's the vast majority I'll happily strain the solids out. But if I can only get 50%, it's a waste. What are your experiences?

2. Does straining the solids out really reduce the stomach problems like I'm hoping it does?

Well your not going to want to use juice because you need to heat it, the mushroom pieces make my tummy feel yucky, plus sometimes it makes you want to gag having thousands of little particles go into your mouth when your tasting shitty tea taste.

I've done it with orange juice specifically to avoid heating it... but now I'm under the impression that low heat (ie, tea) doesn't damage the actives to any large extent.
Regarding thousands of little particles, it's not so bad if you use expensive orange juice with the pulp - you can't distinguish the pulp from the mushroom bits.

But despite all that, I still sometimes get the urge to vomit, which is pretty shitty when you're trying to have a good trip. That's why I'm looking into removing the solids entirely.

Grind up the fungi in a coffee grinder or something like it. By the time it's done steeping the solids will sink to the bottom.

Another thing you could do is take a piece of cheese cloth and make a little bag out of it, sorta like a tea bag. When it's done it can be squeezed and all of the liquid will be extracted and there will be no solids in your tea. You can actually buy that type of bag at home beer brewing stores, their used to steep grains in your brew.

Personally I don't eat the remaining solids.

Is that better than emptying and refilling a couple of tea bags?

What I do is get like a half to a full oz, grind if dry or chop if fresh, and pour hot water over em in a cup, enough to make a gram=a shot or fl. oz. then I strain it through a clean old white tee and squeezz it good. Then I use the pulp like material I make a second tea which if a half oz is used is one good trip and too much if a whole Oz is used. Maybe on a Oz you can get a third tea Im not sure. The pulp is all nasty a mushy, just watching you eat that stuff would make me shiver, so I make another tea outa it.

I grind it into dust, boil it, then coffee filter it all out, throw in some tea bags, and bam!

Good tea

If your gonna make tea then eat it, why not just eat it in the first place?

You really don't need to eat the dregs at the bottom of the teacup. You can but I mean the whole point of steeping the mushrooms in a tea is to get the psilocybin in the tea. If you want to eat all the leftover crap for the trace amounts that may be left in it, well, that's your business, but blegh.

Many people experience nausea and/or vomiting during mushroom experiences, especially with higher doses. This is largely due to the somewhat indigestible nature of the fungus coupled with the mental reaction to the active ingredients.

So a good tea will remove the "somewhat indigestible" elements.

Here's my tea method. I use a ginger tea which seems to help settle to stomach, made in one of those steel thermos flasks.

- grind the dried shrooms up in a coffee grinder add to flask
- cut the top of of a teabag and pop the contents in with it (ginger tea seems to settle the stomach)
- add a bit of sugar
- pour in a cup worth boiling water
- close the flask and and give it a good shake
- leave it for a while
- repeat the last 2 steps over a period of about 15-20 mins.
- then line a tea strainer with the empty tea bag or put a coffee filter in a funnel
- slowly pour everything through the strainer (takes a little while to get through)
- then use a tea spoon to push the last of the water through

You can repeat this with the collected solid to extract some more but I've never found it necessary.

The result has not a trace of solid at the bottom of the cup!

mental reaction to the active ingredients
I've also read that the speed of come up or "mental reaction" can also contribute to the nausea. If that's the case it might be worth taking your time dosing. So rather than the whole dose downed in one, try sipping the tea over the course of an hour or so giving your mind and body more time to adjust.

Good luck and have fun trying...

So most people say to discard. Do you still assume that most of the psilocybin comes through? Will a 3.5 gram dose be more-or-less the same?
