The Tale of the Broken Juice Glass (My First inoculation)
    #8487260 - 06/05/08 07:11 AM (15 years, 10 months ago)

Im an amateur mycologist and Ive been reading this site for the last two or three months while gathering supplies for my first grow over the last month or so. I sterilized my PF BRF jars yesterday and set this morning for my first inoculation - Ive been meticulous in my setup and used a glove box cut from a rubbermaid tub (breaking a box cutter in the process), however, the only item I was unable to find was an alcohol lamp.

As Im setting up, I try to find a shot glass to use as a makeshift lamp - of course, I cant find one this morning. Ive been so jittery to get started I was barely able to sleep last night and woke up two hours ahead of schedule this morning. I decide Im going through with it, regardless, and decide to use a juice glass.

I setup my station and fill up the juice glass about 1/3 of the way with rubbing alcohol, toss a few cotton balls in, and light a match. It works and didnt explode! The flame was a bit excessive, but I figure its manageable. As Im pulling my jars out of the pot I sterilized them in, I hear a CRAAAACK! and the juice glass literally pops in half. I stuff the metal pot over the glass to put out the fire. Thankfully, I only lost a juice glass, but I had to use a candle to flame-sterilize my needle (guess its going to be a crapshoot to see if I get contams)

Anyway, heres my piece of lore to add for my fellow newbies: dont use a juice glass as an alcohol lamp

You can find an alcohol lamp on ebay for about $10.00.
Or you could make one from a 1/2 pint jar. There is a tek here somewhere, and It looks like it would work much better than a juice glass.
I know that doesnt help you this morning but it is an option for any future grows.
Good luck
Peace.

Bummer...

The point, though, is that the needle gets red hot. A butane lighter works, and so does a gas stove. A candle can be used as a last resort of course. The only drawback really is the thick black soot left behind on the needle.

You can keep an alcohol soaked paper towel in the glove box and wipe down the blackened needle.
