Casing layer instructions
    #8482673 - 06/04/08 07:12 AM (15 years, 9 months ago)

I can't find a post that explains the layers of casing. I understand I use a bottom inch of vermiculite and water, a 1.5 inch layer of mycelium, and a half inch of peat moss/vermiculite for the top layer. Is this right?

No verm at the bottom.

Um. No. Not from my understanding.

Often times a casing layer is a mix of items that "seal" the mycelium layer. Here's how some do it.

Put a 1/4 of casing layer down. Put several inches of mycelium. Let the mycelium sit for 24 hours to heal. Put on casing layer (1/4 inch to 2 inches - depending on substrate level (mycelium).

The casing layer is done differently by everyone. Use something that works for you. 1/4 verm, 1/4 coir plus some gypsum. or all verm or all coir.

Do you mean put 1/4 inch of casing layer at bottom?

I don't recommend the bottom layer of casing mix. If you're substrate isn't over saturated, this layer will absorbe moisture from your substrate, which isn't good when you think about it. The casing layer is to create a microclimate for primordia growth, it belongs on top.

Some people do to help retain moisture, but it's not necessary.

Don't let everyone fool you. It's not has hard as it sounds once you have healthy mycelium.

My friends have done it with minimum casing layers (just verm), and maximum casings (verm, peat, gypsum, etc.) - all with similar results.

Experiment a little, and have some fun!

Truth in this, I imagine.
