Pleurotus eryngii - Primordia?
    #8463884 - 05/30/08 02:08 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

Dear all,

I would just like to share some pics taken today of what I think are king oyster mushrooms starting to fruit:

Incubation: 16 days @ 24 deg.C

Fruiting : room temp @ 10 to 15 deg.C (7 days after removal from incubator)

This is my first mushroom crop ever!

Any comments?

I believe that looks ok. Within the next day or so you should start to see the formation of caps on some of the larger knots.

Those pins look nice and fat!

What are the growing conditions? Substrate? etc...

Hi caricapapaya,

Yes I am quite impressed with these pins myself.

I bought some fresh mushrooms from a local store and cloned them on PDA. I then made a liquid culture of plain bacteriological nutrient broth. I then inoculated some sterilised wheat.Liquid culture works very nice with eryngii.

After colonisation I used the exact recipe outlined in Let's Grow Mushrooms! by RR video - The wood chips subtrate part. I did my fruiting in an autoclave-able bag.

RH - 100% (My digital humidity meter boms out - Reads HH)
Temperature - 16 deg.C

My fruiting camber was humidified with perlite.

I also installed a large aquarium pump for fresh air. The thing drives me mad (noise) - So look for a silent type when you want to buy one. I also left my kitchen lights on at least 12 hours of the day. (Normal florescent type)

Misting by hand in the morning and then in the evening with distilled water. More mistings were done on week ends.

That was it!

They seem to have enough light, but make sure you give LOTS of fresh air exchange. A sure sign of insufficient air exchange is large stems and tiny caps, which king oyster already has anyway. I doubt an aquarium pump is going to be enough. Fan it out well a few times per day and leave the lid crooked or even off. Oysters will tolerate a lower humidity once pins form than they will tolerate stale air. Just a though. Looking good so far.

Picture update 2008/06/09
