Is there a length of time that a substrate jar can sit before inocculating?
    #8451886 - 05/27/08 07:09 PM (15 years, 10 months ago)

I purchased two myco jars pre sterilized from a website and they arrived about a week before my spores. They sat for that time and then I added about 6ccs of spore solution in each. Can the myco jars go bad after sitting that long? I realize that I used a lot of spore solution, but did I use too much?

Those jars are probably screwed. First of all, they are myco jars and second of all, 6CC's each is overkill.

Please don't tell us you got them from sporebank?

Nonsense. They will be perfectly fine assuming you are taking the proper sterile precautions, they will not contaminate or lose substantial moisture over a week assuming you purchased from a reputable vendor. The vendors don't mail out "mycojars" that lose viability after a week.

Also, adding 6 ccs of spore solution is not going to hurt anything. It's not necessarily going to help as it really is overkill but it's not as if your chance of failure rises as the amount of spores increase. If you are using quart jars 6cc will not negatively effect your jar's moisture level.

People will give you a hard time simply for buying "mycojars" but in all likelihood the jars are perfectly fine and you will see growth within a week or so.

I was refering to the excessive spore solution, which could lead to Bacillus. I have seen lots of people buying from Sporebank, and their mycojars are not recommended. You know, the ones with the polyfil stuffed in the top.

Wow thanks for all the quick feedback. I purchased from University Scientific.com. I have a full syringe left and I think I will try and make BRF cakes next. This way I'll have more control with my new hobby. Thanks again.

I can say sporebank sucks with personal experience. I did the same the a few years ago. I ordered 2 or 3 of their "super myco jars" and they were all contamed upon arrival. I have heard more horror stories about them than all of the others put together.

I don't know how they luer so many new cultivators into buying their products. I think, not sure, that a long time ago they were vendors for the Shroomery, but everyone was having problems with them so they were removed from the list. Anyway, like I said, with the combination of sporebank jars, 6CC's innoculant each, they might not turn out so good. Sorry, but next time use a vendor.
