Colonized manure??
    #8446718 - 05/26/08 12:34 PM (15 years, 10 months ago)

I wrote this post yesterday and got a camera today for some pics. I've got some bins I mixed 8 days ago of poo and colonized wbs. the mycelium is growing up from the sides and the top is a light redish brown, nothing like i have seen before. There are little sprouts of pure white mycelium and the shit when mixed was a dark brown. I usually get fully white subs after 4 days and just keep them in for a week. It might just be the substrate but i could not find anything on the forum fitting this description. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mh... I've seen several substrates before, looking like this.
They simply haven't been colonized long enough.
However, I don't really see any "reddish/brown" (maybe due to the photographing), but what I see is metabolites (the yellow liquid).

It's a product the mycelium produces to either find of contams or break down substrate parts (or both).
It's harmless but can be an indicator for infections.

Does the whole thing smell any different from what you've experienced yet?

no difference in the smell. I always get the metabolites. It does look better than yesterday. I just dont see these getting pure white, do you? Everytime ive used poo it gets pure white, coir on the other hand never for me. Ive also never had a sub have to colonize over a week. So you dont think theres any problem? I might have used a little less grain this time.

Using less spawn actually always increases the time the substrate needs to fully colonize.

The longer the substrate takes to colonize, the bigger the chance for contams is to get a grip.

So for the next time, you better use the amount of substrate again, you've used before, but I guess you've been so far .

For now, everything you can do is to give it more time.
