Where has all my hard drive space gone?
    #8446076 - 05/26/08 06:49 AM (15 years, 10 months ago)

I am currently running windows on a 10GB hard drive (slaved with a 60GB) and I'm rather confused as to why it says i only have 1.5GB remaining on my 10GB, even though i only have 4.3GB worth of data (inc windows). So where has the rest gone? Temporary file? so I'm just wondering if my computer isn't cleaning up itself properly?

I don't know.

Download this http://windirstat.info/

It lists the folders that take up the most space from highest to lowest. That way you can at least know where they are coming from. Cleanup all of your system restore points. Mine have been known to go up to 10 GB, and really mess you up. Program files? Temporary files can certainly take up alot of space depending on what you do with your computer. Use disk cleanup, disk defrag, cleanup your system restore points, and then use that software to check the largest folders.

Also what operating system do you use, and how old is your pc? If you are using a fat16 partition it can be a pain in the ass. Hard drives in fat 16 can appear to be full when they are in fact not. The reason being is when you save a file thats 2B your computer MUST set aside a slot on your hard drive, but it cant just set aside 2kb...it must set aside 16kb. Now that may not seem like alot, but depending on your temporary internet files, your teporary files, and how many files your make of a small size they can really add up.

Thats a very sloppy example of fat16 I woke up, and about to go back to sleep. If you need more explanation or help just let me know. Peace.:mushroom2:

His hard drive scanner allows for a quick visual inspection of what your hard drive space is devoted to.
