First Morel finds and VERY interesting...

I went for a walk today and found my first Morels ever. I think the season is about over so I wasnt surprised to have only found three (two of the three seem past prime) Here is a pic of the single nice one...I vowed to never eat morels until ive first tried a fresh wild one, so even having one to taste is good enough for me...
Now the Very interesting part... For the past few hours Ive been elated because I initially thought these were truffles! I found the first one laying on the ground, there were a lot of small animal digs (like the kind squirrels leave behind after digging up their acorns) and im almost positive it was dug up by an animal...it was laying freely on top of the leaves; the spores inside smell very nice... earthy, fragrant...almost like chocolate in a way. In a frenzy, I began clearing leaves and feeling for rises in the ground. after a few minutes I found this buried 3-4 inches below the soil. I took it home and cleaned it off and this is what it looked like cutting it open revealed the following...
Has anyone ever seen anything like this? A subterranean tuber like fungus with this type of internal structure? they were growing under a gathering of several types of trees, one was an evergreen, i believe one was slippery elm, and im not quite sure on the other. the brown spores seem to liquefy after being handled...the wall of the fungus itself is about 1/4 an inch thick (maybe a little bit thicker) I'm completely stumped...if there are any other factors needed please kindly ask, as im not sure as of how to approach this type of ID request.

Theres the problem Cactu my buddy! They have no stem what so ever!!! completely tuber like! the one that I found above ground was clearly taken out of the ground by a digging animal. The larger one was harvested from below the ground by myself. I was able to tell that it was there because the ground felt softer there and i just began digging.

It's just some puffball or false truffle. The spores mature from the center out, and go from a dense, light coloured material, to a mushy dark spore mass, and finally they turn to a fine, dark coloured powder.
Start here perhaps:

Don't eat it, it could be toxic (or disgusting).

Thanks CureCat. I ended up saving the spores (im going to try to make a collection of spore based water color paints)so it ended up being a great find regardless.
btw I just ate the morel and im very upset that I wasted so much of the season looking for subbs and ovoids rather than morel hunting!

Finding one morel can be done, but more than likely more were in the area. That's why they call them morels.
Good luck finding more.
