A Morris man discovered a rarity recently.
Dale Yard is an avid morel mushroom hunter.
And a week ago, Yard ambled upon an unusual sight.
“I was down along the Illinois River, around 10 o'clock in the morning, and was walking through some real light brush,” Yard related. “I was making my way through the brush and all of a sudden, I saw a reflection of a can in the middle. The can was submerged but not buried very deep. That's why I was able to see the brightness. I looked and saw this Pepsi can and then I looked closer and noticed a morel growing out of the can.”
And that is freakish?
“It is very unusual,” said Yard. “Mushrooms grow from spores but I can't imagine how the spores got inside the can. I would say the odds of something like that happening are a million to one.”
The morel was part of the mushroom treasure that Yard harvested this spring.
“I ended up with around 30,” he said. “I just go out looking for them. My dad introduced me to hunting mushrooms. We did it a lot when we were younger. It was a family tradition.”
Yard, 40, is a 1986 graduate of Morris Community High School where he played football and wrestled.
Hunting mushrooms has a couple of positive aspects to Yard's life.
“I just like getting outdoors,” he explained. “It is good exercise and you are out in nature.”
Yard says he has found mushrooms in various landscapes and types of soil.
“This morel I discovered along some dead elm trees but mushrooms can grow anywhere,” Yard pointed out. “I have found them in sandy soil and black dirt. You need to look for them in the early spring. Right now, it is almost too late to find them.”
Some veteran morel hunters look for certain tree species. Trees commonly associated with morels include dead and dying elms, ash, sycamore, tuliptree, cottonwoods and old apple trees.
“This was a good spring for mushrooms,” said Yard. “It has been rainy and humid. There have been some warm days, enough to really help the mushrooms grow.
Once harvested, Yard prepares the mushrooms for consumption.
“I do the cooking,” Yard said. “I usually slice the mushrooms and then clean them by using a washing strainer. Then I get the grease going. I usually like to coat them with fish batter or bread them. I dip them in a mixture of eggs and milk and then coat them with the batter.”
Asked how the mushrooms taste, Yard said, “Really rich and they are very filling.”
