Drying Idea
    #843698 - 08/26/02 07:06 AM (21 years, 6 months ago)

I have been thinkin alot lately and i came up with this. Usually I use many containers with silica in them to dry my mushies and I want to be a little more efficient.
If I were to fan dry like normal and then put a layer of silica in the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket, put a layer of mushies, cover with a layer of silica, then another layer of mushies and so on and so forth until the top. It kinda reminds me of some ancient mummification techniques with salt. So any ideas if this would work and any suggestions on depth of each layer of silica? Thanks in advance.

I know a guy who uses a 5 gallon bucket dessicant system. I borrowed it once, cause i was too lazy to make my own. He's currently banned though. It's kinda hard to explain and i don't remember all completely what it involved. I might be able to get some digi cam pics sometime.

use damprid, it works like a charm. it's still best to fan dry first though.

I like to dry them in the oven.

Turn on your oven, and lower the temperature to the LOWEST allowable temperature. Put your shrooms in a ceramic plate, then put them in the oven. Leave the oven door slighly open (about 1-2 inches). It's important you leave the door a little open.

The warm air current dries them really quickly. Cracker dry in 2 - 3 hours.

They do lose a *little* potency, but so what? Take an extra 1 gram per serving to make up for it. Beats hours of fanning, dessicants, drying chambers, more wating, and all that crap.

this person i was talkin to said he doesn't even use dessicant ... too much extra $$$.... he just slices them a bit along the side without actually cutting them in half lays them out on a single layer and puts a fan on 'em for two days and they're dry.

I still like to have a dessicant chamber to store them in anyways. I had some mold in a plastic bag. Gave a very bad trip.

i know to fan dry them for 24 hours first, the whole point is to save space by being able to dry more shrooms in a smaller place, and damp rid is just another dessicant so what i want to know is not how to dry shrooms, i know that already. i need to know if this proposed setup would work decently.

no, it really wouldn't. silica gel is toxic. how are you going to remove the layers without getting it on the mushrooms. I'll e-mail you some pics of my friends setup as soon as he gets back from vacation, that is, if your intent on the 5 gallon bucket chamber. You could use a bucket, but i wouldn't do the layering thing you were talking about. just one layer on the bottom, then the mushrooms above that.

See if this makes any sense. Here is a crude drawing of the dessicant chamber i was talking about. Any dessicant could work in place of the damp rid. Basically it keeps the mushrooms off the desicant, and utilizes all of the room in the bucket to dry them. Works excelent, especially because if is out of sight. it completely removes the water. It uses 4 peices of wite mesh 9 1/2" square with the corners bent up at a 90 degree angle. the bottom of the threaded bar ($1.49 at home depot) is bolted to the bottom mesh peice, and the others slide overtop and rest on it. This way you can pull them all out on one peice and then slide off each individual rack. I got the bucket free, but they had them at wal-mart for $4 with lids. I?ll post pictures when i get them. just wanted to share

no problem man. The drawings don't do it justice. it really isn't that hard to do. I'll get pics up and post them hopefully this weekend. Let me see what it'll cost you.
bucket $4
threaded rod $1.49
washers $0.20
damp rid. $3
and a small roll of wire mesh wouls be about $5.
about $13 depending on if you have some of the stuff. You can always improvise. I also just bought the damp rid refill, and put it in a 32 oz yogart cup, with drain holes in the bottom.
