Straw Substrate
    #8428146 - 05/21/08 10:14 AM (15 years, 10 months ago)

This is my first time using straw as a substrate. I have been colonizing straw using 3 different methods; 1-In a plastic mesh bag, 2-In a clear plastic bag, 3-In a Tupperware box.

The mycelium has covered most of the surface of all these containers now and i was wondering if it is the right time to induce pinning? I am going to fruit each out of these containers, the bags with little slits and i will leave the Tupperware box as it is.

Is there anything major wrong with this method? and again... When should i start pinning???Ty

What does the mesh bag look like? does it have enough adequate air exchange for the mushies but little enough to avoid evaporation water loss? Most say it is best to fruit straw without a casing layer because of its light airy, water holding texture.

My advice is to leave enough air space for them to grow into. Don't let the bag touch the developing mushrooms to avoid bacterial rot and aborts. Fan and mist as much as you can without overwatering.

I mist once a day and fan as frequently as I can, lightly misting as needed when they dry out. I hope everything goes well.

I think there is plenty of air getting in, but it did initially start to dry so i just gave it a brief soak and drained it off. Should i wait till the mycelium has engulfed the bag before fruiting? i would say 60%-80% is covered.

wait til its 100% colonized. Straw is notorious for getting contaminated, I wont even try it yet, lol. If you fruit it now you might get fruits, but the other 20 to 40 percent will get bacterial rot or overrun with trichoderma.

I had trich take over a casing in my old apartment and had to wait to move out because it started growing on anything, oranges, pumpkins, and even sugar free cool-aid. I was literally having nightmares about it.

If you have the patience, just wait. The time you wait will pay off in grams of fruit. And dont forget that you get a few flushes if you're lucky.

Let me know how it goes. I want first hand testimony about straw. I don't think dunking is bad, but mist it if you can and dunk between flushes for sure. What kind of straw are you using by the way?

I've always used straw. It's pretty good. Normally don't get more than 2-3 flushes though. Cubes will grow on pretty much anything. The first time I went bulk, I actually grew some ecuadors on Hay.
