Dinners to celebrate magazine that takes morel high ground
May 15, 2008 - jsonline.com

Mushrooms are popping up, and so is a new magazine all about them.

Fungi, based in Richfield, is celebrating its launch in conjunction with two five-course mushroom dinners: at Heaven City in Mukwonago on Sunday, and at Sanford in Milwaukee on Tuesday.

The Heaven City dinner is $50; several openings remain. It's also the Wisconsin Mycological Society's annual spring mushroom dinner. To reserve a seat or for more information, contact the society's John Steinke at (262) 363-7407.

A few openings still are available at the Sanford dinner ($65 excluding tax and tip, $20 for optional wine pairings). To attend, contact the restaurant at (414) 276-9608.

Britt Bunyard of Richfield - who holds a doctorate in mycology, the study of mushrooms - is the publisher and editor-in-chief of the new, full-color magazine.

Fungi made its debut this month, and will publish five times a year: four seasonal issues and one special themed issue. This year's special issue, due in early fall, will be dedicated to truffles, including those found in such unexpected places as the desert and Oregon, Bunyard said.

The magazine is aimed at amateur and professional mycologists alike, and its offerings will include how-to articles on topics such as cultivating mushrooms, as well as peer-reviewed technical papers.

Articles in the inaugural issue include "Mushroom Love, Morels: Seasonality, Meditation, Celebration," complete with recipes, and a mouthful of a different sort, the scientifically oriented "Myxomycete Plasmodia and Fruiting Bodies: Unusual Occurrences and User-friendly Study Techniques."

I am a member of the group and have spoke to Britt a couple times but I haven't met him yet. The mycology club has reported notable news in the Medical Mycology field, including the research on cluster headaches. But they are not a drug-oriented group.

They were giving away free copies of the first issue of this magazine at the mycological society meeting the other day. Its pretty good, not super advanced like the journals and not too noobish either. They have a cool article on using white umbrellas for mushroom photography. I plan to read it when I get a chance.
