East Texas Cowpie find * 1
    #8368064 - 05/06/08 08:18 AM (15 years, 10 months ago)

Intact Mushroom

Split View

Spore Print

* Habitat - Cow Pasture, East-Texas, U.S.A., growing on dried cow dung.
* Characteristics of the gills - black or dark blue attached gills.
* Characteristics of the stem - 7" stem, 3/4" diameter thick, white on bottom to cream towards top, Somewhat hollow, broken skirt or hood in middle of stalk. The stem showed a darkening stain where handled.
* Characteristics of the cap - cap folded down and looked like a bullet head when found. Cap was browner in middle with flecks of material on apex, and the cap was pale or white from top down to edges. Edges were starting to show blackening. After picking from dung the blueish bruising began expanding from outer cap edge towards top. (diameter, color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc)
* Spore print color - appears black or very dark blue. Has a slight irridescent purple or dark blue sheen under flourescent light.
* Color that the mushroom bruises - black or very dark blue.
* Scent of the mushroom - smells of grass mixed with typical mushroom odor.

After working all day picking veggies at a friends farm we were about to part ways when he spotted this beauty standing tall on a cow-pie near the barn on the outside of a cattle run. Before I could stop him and get my camera hed already cut it from its base and handled it. The trip home took its toll on this big fella and the cap had purpled a great deal before I could set up the lights and camera to take photos.

Everthing points to a magic species in my estimation, but some other opinions would be appreciated. I will be in area again and will try to take some living photos for further ID and admiration. This was the biggest Ive ever come across in East Texas. All characteristics match very closely to some I gathered in East Texas area twenty years ago that proved to be very active.

Your ID appears to be dead on. I am humbled by the quickness and depth of your powers.

Thanks.

hey Holesynpe! im not to sure your question is appropriate considering the rules http://www.shroomery.org/6235/Mushroom-Hunting-FAQ
but i can help you find the answers for yourself.  if you search the shroomery you can find the parameters for the growth of cubensis and information on the best time to check the fields. then once you have that go to http://www.weather.com/weather/monthly/USTX0327?from=36hr_topnav_undeclared
to observe the precipitation within the past few days and even the humidity when u click on specific dates.

Once you handle all this youll be set to go:thumbup:

good luck and remember

Very nice detailed description!

As others have said, it's a Coprinus, an inky cap.

Keep on searching, and ye shall find.
