filter discs

We are about to get some filter discs from Micron Magick in a few days, though we only ordered 25. So the question is: are coffee filters or anything else a viable alternative to filter discs?

You could use tyvek, or alternately pollyfil.

Where can you find tyvek and what is it exactly?

In reply to:

Tyvek can be found in several forms.

Your local US post office has Express Envelopes made from it....label even says it's made from tyvek.
You can pick these up for free....but they state that misuse of this Envelope is a crime...lolz

You can buy suits made of it at your local safety and supply store....these are used for asbestos removal....etc.

You can buy a roll of it from Home Depot or a building supply store....it's used for a Vapor barrier inbetween walls and siding on houses.

Making your own filter disc from tyvek:
I bought a round shaped protractor and use a permanent ink marker.
the protractor is a 6" around....and sharp scissors are a must!
draw a circle around the round shaped protractor on the tyvek.
and then cut out the circle..... wha la.....you have a tyvek filter disk!

Stick with a good grade filter disk and/or tyvk instead of any other material. You will not be sorry -- you did. You can get tyvk envelopes from the USPO for free. Simply cut to suit as others above have suggested.

Not to step on any toes (especialy Mo?s & other well known Shroom Guru?s ), but coffee filters do work under certain circumstances. For that matter so do vaccum cleaner bags & a host of other material.

The Raccoon knows, because a time or 5 he ran out of filter disks -- in the middle of doing large scale grain to grain transfers & rather than stop -- he improvised with coffee filters & once with vacum cleaner bags.

However, these materials were PC?ed with the loaded jars & were rubber banded on externaly 3 or 4 thick. The transfers were made in a quasi/clean hepa filtered room & under a flow hood. Below is a poor quality pic of a fully colonized quart & half gallon jar of BS that had only coffee filters applied. So it can be done w/coffee filters. But not if your a beginner without a sterile work space, hepa filtered air & a flow hood or suitable glove box. Which most beginners don?t have (yet).

Poly-fill has been a friend of mine for a while.
He has been very good to me.
Though hes a cheap bastard.

I would like to try out this tyvek.

Love that picture of that woman.

I noticed that Office Max sells some envelopes and cd sleeves made of tyvek. 100 cd sleeves for 24.99. Seems like the size of a sleeve might be good to cover most jars. Just a thought.

Oooops, just noticed the price of discs at vender sites,
cheaper there than office max, unless you have to the
discs right away doesn't seem like good idea to cut
up cd sleeves for that price.

You can get tyvek much cheaper buying it in a building supply store.

As far as the US Postal envelopes.....I think they are pulling the tyvek ones and going with plastic now....  :frown:

Fed Ex still has tyvek envelopes....

some people say that using coffee filters are not a good idea, but in my experience they have worked great so far. as of matter of fact i just used 5 jars that i used coffee filters on them and i still have another 7. non of them had any problems whats so ever. and most of the jars were fully colonized in 14 days.
PLEASE NOTE THAT I USED 2 FILTERS PER JAR.

I'm interested in this tyvek material... One question... Whats the disadvantages compared to the filter discs available at mycosupply and all those places...

And can you pressure cook them or do they end up turning brown and brittle? How many layers should you use? one? How do you hold them on? Rubberband? Would the rubber band melt in the pressure cooker?

Thanks
