ID request once, couldn't draw a spore print
    #8333531 - 04/27/08 09:16 AM (15 years, 11 months ago)

I found this unique little guy growing by it's self in a patch of tall grass in a horse field. let me know what your opinions are on it. I couldn't draw a spore print, it hasn't rained in like 2 weeks but It hasn't seemed to affect the most prolific of some mushrooms although the colonies are tending to just muster 1 or 2 up at a time. well here are the pics

Cap nipple on top with dark ring that was starting to fade on the outer ring of the cap
Gills, whitish brown
Stem, firm and white
:: No bluing ::

thanks, I don't think it is a pan foe because of the unique features of the cap and stem, but I don't think it's a pan subb because of the lack of dark gills. To bad I didn't get a print.

I don't think it's a cubensis or pan, let's see what the other experts say!  :smile:

I do not know what it is, but if you are looking for an active shroom, then it should bruise blue especially around the the bottom of the stem. LOL

not if it's a pan subb... They don't usually bruise blue. Yeah it's a more energy efficient shroom! THEY'RE GOING GREEN!

Looks like a Cortinarius perhaps, or maybe Inocybe or Hebeloma, all of which are mycorrhizal, meaning they are reliant on plants (specifically trees, in this case) in a mutual symbiotic relationship. What trees was it growing near?
How would you describe the scent of the mushroom?

You couldn't get a spore print because that mushroom is what we call a 'pin', which is to say it is not mature, and the spores have not fully developed, thus no spores were ready to drop for a spore print. If you find more, wait for them to grow a bit more, then try and get a spore print. I'm guessing a tan-brown or rusty-brown spore colour.

Nice ID request.

Thanks CureKat, I will have to say the closest tree it was growing near was maybe an oak or elm, and that was about 20ft away, was growing out of dirt where a dung pile had dropped. it just stopped raining pretty hard so I'll take another peep around the field tomorrow, thanks for letting me know it's def. not a pan subb!

It could be a poisonous species, so of course don't eat it.  Look forward to seeing what else you turn up.  :smile:
