~I Have Some PCP!!!~
    #8332168 - 04/26/08 08:52 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

Ok..I have a stainless steel 6 Quart PC,in which I've made some successful sterilizing batches. However,in a previous attempt,I guess the water ran out,and the cooker was cooking dry heat.Needless to say,,everything burnt, charred and stinky.I washed the cooker as best I could..and tried to do another batch..Guess what??The shit got burned again(IDK WHY!!!).Whatever, the pots nice and clean again. My question is,why is it burning??Is steam supposed to come out at a steady rate..or little shots of steam every other second??Also..my gasket is tinted yellow..and stinks BADLY of burnt rubber. It doesn't have any cracks though..and still holds up the pressure. And when I do PC something..the steam kinda smells like something's burning. Is my gasket good..or should I throw it away??The only thing wrong with it is that it stinks very bad(even when I wash it)of burnt rubber.Any comments please?

I highly recommend not to do PCP, but go for it.

When I had a Mirro PC, the weight was only supposed to spudder 2-3 times a minute, not every other second. If it's constantly spuddering, you aren't maintaining steady pressure and you're losing too much steam, which is causing it to dry out.

Do you have a manual for the PC? If not, try to find out what kind it is and look for the manual online.

It has a "switch" where I simply select which mode to PC on (10PSI or 15 PSI).The manual says to maintain a steady flow of steam once it reaches pressure..but pressure cooking a few inches of water for an hour and a half will surely dry it out??!Right?Also..should the jars be youching water..Ive read it might dry and cook the substrate. My PC is tiny..and if I put too much shit on the bottom..the extra 4 jars on top won't fit...
Any help with my PCP...Pressure Cooker Problems

The thing that I learned about pressure cookers is this:

1. Heat it up SLOWLY!

2. Once steam starts to "hiss" out let it vent for 5 minutes, put weight on and let it get up to pressure.

3. ONCE YOU REACH pressure, turn the dial down to the LOWEST setting that will cause your weight NOT to jiggle, but still maintain pressure, if it doesn't have a gauge this will be a "trial and error" thing but if you jack around with it enough you will find the spot on the dial where this happens.

I almost let mine boil dry once too, but I saved it before it could, and once I started doing those things above, even after 1+ hr of PC'ing, I didn't lose any water at all hardly, MAYBE an 8th of an inch or so, if even that.

Hope that helps even in the slightest, good luck to you!

Thanks dude..That was def. helpful.I'll try making another batch one of these days...another question. When I stack the jars..is it ok if the top of the jars are almost touching the lid of the PC??Meaning theres like 1/4 inch of space between the PC lid and the aluminum foil of the jars.Would this affect anything in any way??Maybe it could fuck up my moisture content on my top jars...??Oh yeah..when I PC..is it ok if the water level reaches to maybe halfway of the jars length??Thanks

My water is about one quarter up the jars (also jars are sitting on the rack that came with it, if you don't have one of these, it can scorch your shit, and crack your jars, anyways never had any trouble with that.

Don't know about stacking them, never stacked mine, I only have room for 4 quart jars anyways. Thinking about switching out to bags because of this...

This is what I do:
1.Add hot tap water to PC.Turn on electric stove to a high(6)setting.Place PC on stove and wait for the water to start simmering/steaming.
2.Add jars to the PC,then place lid tightly on PC.Leave PC on the stove fro the pressure to reach 15PSI.
3.Then once it reaches 15PSI,I lower the setting to around 4-5.When steam starts leaving vent and PC starts making low noises..I start the timer.
My question is how concerned should I be about my burnt gasket??Nobody's answered this question. Also, should I maybe preheat an extra stove top to a low setting..and place the PC on this stove top once it reaches 15PSI om another stove top??Thanks

Mix the pressure cooker with approximately 1:2 ratio PCP/Ketamine, then proceed to insufflate. Maybe sell the shit and buy a new pressure cooker?

and yes the water should touch the bottom of the jars not anymore though....
