Reviewing for math final - Help?
    #8329935 - 04/26/08 09:47 AM (16 years, 26 days ago)

Well, finals are only a week away and so I'm reviewing. :sleep:

At the moment I'm going over everything we covered in my math course, and I've got most of it down, but for the life of me I cannot factor this damned problem.  :banghead:

I'm sure this is simple stuff for some of you, but mathematics happens to be my one weak point, so play nice. :tongue:

Anyway, here's the problem:

Factor completely:

x3+2x2-21x-42

Thanks in advance. :heart:

To factor 3rd order polynomials, you need to you the 'grouping' method. Does that sound familiar?

Factor a common term out of the first two terms (x^2 in this case), then factor a common term out of the third and fourth therm (-21). Then factor out the (x+2) from each term, because it is now common. When doing factoring by grouping, the two terms left should be equal. Now that you have factored out the (x+2), you are left with (x+2)(x^2-21).

Thanks! :thumbup:

I'm familiar with grouping, but for whatever reason my brain just couldn't recognize that there was also an (x+2) in the third and fourth term.  Thinking that there wasn't a common binomial, I then tried to find a trinomial in the whole mess and of course hit a dead end.

:mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2:s for your master-tutor skills.

Anyway, thanks again. :bow:

Have a great day and enjoy your weekend, friend. :tripping:

No problem, good luck on your final.

I can almost guarantee you that if you get a 3rd order polynomial to factor on the test, the grouping method will work.  Otherwise its trial and error or the god forsaken formula, neither of which are ever expected from the student in my experience.  The most common mistake I see when doing this method is factoring the negative sign correctly, so beware.

I'll keep that in mind. :yesnod:

Thanks again, and enjoy your weekend. :sunny:
