depends on the size of the tub you intend to use. you don't want your substrate too shallow, and you don't want it too deep.

it's about a 28 gallon container, but it's clear blue. is that a problem? should i just get a solid color container?

the schools seem to be devided on the importance of an opaque container, but side pinning does seem to be more prevalent from a container which lets light through, and it's an issue best avoided and a solution easy to provide. even spray paint around the lower sides and bottom will fix that.
with a container of 28gal, you could get a good substrate depth from 1 bag and still get a couple nice casings from the other. i'm not much of a monotub guy, so do it the way you like or see what others advise but i wouldn't get my sub any shallower than 1" personally.

well im doing WBS too straight coir, then cased with 50/50+ and i plan on putting a bag at the bottom to block light out and when it's incubating in the tub i blan on covering it with a blanket or something then casing it and uncovering. also with the depth im thinkin sub will be about 1 1/2-2" maybe more than a 3/4" casing layer.

28 gallon is pretty big. I use 2 quarts of WBS spawn for my 18 gallon tubs.
For a tub that size, you'll want to use at least 3 to 4 quarts for a 4 to 5" substrate depth.
The translucent tub will cause some problems with side/bottom pinning if you don't find a way to block out light from getting to everything but the top of your substrate. A black plastic bag used as a liner is one option. Painting or taping the outside of your tub is another.

Just read your last post. You'll want to go deeper than an inch and a half substrate depth for a tub that big to help keep your RH at a maximum. That's a large space to humidify.

Good call. That way if something does go wrong, you won't lose it all.

yea thats what im saying, so i think imma go buy 2 mid size tubs that are solid color cut the lid plastic clear inserted so i can see whats up. 1/2 of a bag per tub then the other half into 2 casings for each bag. so thats 2 monotubs and 4 casings, orrrrr 4 monotubs . how small can a monotub go? :O

oh if you're doing bulk i'd say you can spawn half a bag to a good 4-6in depth of coir in such a tub, though you may want to use a higher spawn ratio than that and stick towards the 4" range.

yeah, bulk subs and a healthy amount of spawn open a lot of avenues.

alright well this is set in my mind, 2 mono tubs about 20 gal. sub will be 1/2 of the 3lb bag to coir/verm, cased with 50/50+ or MGMC. then the rest of the 2 bags maybe small tubs or casings. but idk if the 1 brick per tub will be enough for a 4" sub level.
