Humidity Problem...I think
    #8296797 - 04/17/08 03:56 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

Hey again everyone, I birthed 7 of my 9 jars, dunked and rolled them, and put them in my FC.

My problem is: I bought one of those RadioShack digital hygrometers (the only thing I could find in my area). Im using a 124 quart rubbermaid bin as my FC. It is a Shotgun FC. I have about 5 inches of well drained, loose perlite in the bottom of it. It seems, (according to my hygrometer anyway) that my humidity wont go past 90%. Ive been spraying and fanning the hell out of the thing about 3 times a day.

Also, I attempted to salt test my hygrometer, after about 5 hours it was reading 79%...I only put a few drops of water in the salt, but maybe it was too much?

Ive tried covering some holes up, still nothing. I guess I cant really trust this hygro eh?

What else could I do to raise my humidity without re-doing my whole FC?

Don't trust your hygrometer.

You can get a hygrometer at most cigar stores/smoke shops.
And probably for under $10.00

Smell inside, does it seem like moist wet humid air?

I bet youre fine especially if you have 5 in perlite. I get 99%+ with 3.5" in a 60

are there droplets of condensation on the walls of the fruiting chamber? if so, then youre good to go  or atleast pretty darn close man...

Wrong wrong wrong.

A temperature difference (warmer inside the FC colder outside) can cause condensation with humidities well below 90% and if the temp diff is the opposite (colder in than out) you will never get condensation even at 100%

Thanks guys, I've been to every cigar shop within a 20 mile radius of me, no one has any...

The air in my FC does feel pretty humid, just can't tell how humid...

I did notice a few pins on some of em' but they're tiny and a bit skinny looking.  Hopefully everything works out ok, but it's a learning experience so it is what it is.
