Question about pressure cooker (pics included)
    #8293033 - 04/16/08 07:29 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

Well, I finally received my pressure cooker I got off e-bay. It's a magic seal 7-16. Unfortunately, it did not come with an instruction manual. Here are some pics of the whole thing and of the lid. My main question is, does this kind of cooker require the sealing ring? (cuzz it didn't come with one)

If it is not an all-american it probably needs a ring.

My PC doesn't have a sealing ring. It's a tight fit for the lid. It still might work. Try PC'ing a little water and see if it has a seal. See if the pressure goes up without water leakage.

Heres a link to all the parts and info you need for that thing.
Its about 40 years old I thank so you should buy the ring and safety plug kit, only about 18 bucks with shipping.
I have one but its the presto 23 qrt. very good pressure cookers.
I gave 5 bucks for mine and 18 or so for the seals.

Hope that helps

thanks for the site link... but I would like to avoid spending more money on it if possible... I'm kinda low on cash at the moment. I think I'm gonna just try to PC a bit of water and keep it low pressure to make sure it's safe and all... if it doesn't work, would puting vaseline around the lid help anything?

You can do that but if the thing set for a long time without use it will work the first time but the second time the safety plug will fall due to dry rot.
Its not a danger, it just will not build pressure.
On the other hand it could build pleasure and pop the safety plug witch could be very dangerous for you or anyone standing close by.
18.00 is very little to pay for a well working and safe PC.
A good way to tell if its safe is to feel the ring around the inside of the lid.
Is it hard or brittle?
If its not rubbery or pliable to the touch it needs to be replaced.
15psi can blow a hole right through you, not to mention steam burns.

I have had three and none of them work without the seal.  They just let the pressure out the sides.  It can't hurt to try it with some water.

Couldn't tell from the pic, but yes the ring has to be in place to build pressure.

You need the seal spend the $18
Replace all the rubber even the over pressure plug, it's due!
Clean the groove with soap and water, any bits of old rubber can be rubbed off with a bamboo skewer.
Lightly oil the new ring with corn oil or veggie oil and put it in.
Store it open, that is with the lid on the pot but upside down and not sealed.
Prevents odors and greatly adds to the life of the rubber.
Read the owner's manual available online at presto's web site for their canner.
Same animal different breed.
Good luck with your new cooker, it's a beauty
Swish some food coloring around in it and the lid before you use it...if you have a crack it'll show up.
If it is cracked drill a hole in the bottom and plant a tomato plant in it.
It's a big pipe bomb if it's cracked.

Thanks a lot for all the info, sure enough it didn't build pressure so I went ahead and ordered the ring.... which cost me $7 less than did the cooker.... haha.  Well, I can't wait to start trying grains  I think my next grow will be some Oysters on rye.
