how to prepare dowels
    #8291849 - 04/16/08 03:17 PM (16 years, 3 days ago)

I've tried some dowels made from eucalyptus (that's all I've found in Oz), and although shiitake and reishi are growing on them, they're very slow. My first batch I just soaked them in hot water. The second batch I've added sugar and coffee to the broth and soaked.

Are there any methods for preparing dowels, eg ammending the soak water?

It's probably the oils in the eucalyptus that is slowing colonization.

You could try letting them sit outside for a year to age. The rain may leech out of some of the oils in that time.

if you do that i'd be sure to sterilize the hell out of them, because in one year outside lots of other fungi would "move in". Perhaps switch to sawdust spawn rather then dowels? Can you find suitable sawdust for free/cheap where you are?

I'm in Canberra, sawdust is $24 a trailer load, mixed hardwoods, so far untested by me.
I thought the kiln drying would drive out a lot of the oils-maybe I need to add an oil?
