Casing with brf cakes???
    #8242506 - 04/05/08 01:26 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

Hello my fellow Shroomers,

quick question ...

We are transitioning to casings, we do not have the capacity to run quart jars of colonized rye, we have 25 brf cakes right now on their second flush. Can we start a casing layer using a brf cake that has already flushed twice by crushing it up and mixing it the way you would freshly colonized rye ect... We are going to use the 50 / 50 verm / peat moss method.

the second part of the question is,

because we do not have the capacity to sterilize quart jars, can we make small pint jars of rye grain instead?

we would like to begin a casing layer as soon as possibe, so get at me with your thoughts and ideas, thanks a shit ton

peace

I've heard that you can only case a cake that hasn't produced a flush. I think it's because the mycelium is still growing and can heal itself if broken, whereas mycelium that has fruited cannot.

I'm sure you can make small pint jars of rye if you sterilize with a PC. If you don't have a PC then stick with BRF.

Thank you for the incite about the mycelium, I do have a pressure cooker, so I think i will start with smaller rye jars. Again, thank you for your input

Once the mycelium has changed from the colonizing state to fruiting state it's growth is rather limited.
It can grow on and colonized the layer, but it takes rather long (time for contams to establish) and in most cases fruits pretty poorly if at all.
The mycelium is already exhausted to certain degree, which makes it vulnerable for contams, for it's not really aggressive anymore, making the completion for substrate rather inequitable.

It can work and it has worked for me too, though the results were pretty shitty.
You'd probably get better ones, when you just let your cakes "flush out".

And there's no problem with knocking up half pint grain jars...

You could make up a fresh batch of cakes or make some grain.

But already flushed mycelium is a no no. It is reaching the end of it's life-cycle and will have problems starting to grow again.
