TX Adventures, First Cube find
    #8236766 - 04/04/08 12:54 AM (16 years, 16 days ago)

Well, after journeying to Tyler and driving around to scope out good fields, my friend and I parked the car and hopped on the bikes to look a little closer. We didnt have to go far to find the first mushroom of the day

This was a premature find however, it was a couple hours before we found any other fungus in the area. We were starting to get a little discouraged seeing a lot of poo and nothing growing out of it.
Finally we found a good field with a lot of these brownies and little white guys

After around thirty minutes in the field, POP found my first cube!
It was a little dried already but super exciting nonetheless.

With a little more searching we found all these guys under some pine trees nearby.

Could those of you who know ID the ones which are not p.cubensis?

We walked away with eight small cubensis mushrooms and a whole bunch of the brown ones thinking they might be subbs, but I not knowing what the distinguishing factors are just threw em in the loot sack with it all.

Munched the first one and another and watched natural born killers. Today fuckin slammed.

Oh.. so you guys were finding golden teachers eh?

That is really all most need to know unless you are also finding blue meanies.

Seems like you are also finding Coprinus mushrooms in your photos which are basically no good for what you might be looking for.

And then a type of most likely non-active Panaeolus mushrooms growing from dung which I would also pass up if I might only be looking to collect psychoactives.

Wow, the thunder just woke me up. It's 5:30 a.m. Pouring down really hard. I know it's late in the season, but I think I'm going to try looking for some morels for the next week. I have a nature reserve very short walking distance from my house. Anyone have much luck with morels in Central Texas?

Congrats on the cube find. I have never looked for cubes around Tyler, but I felt certain that they could be located there. I know that Shreveport which is down I20 a little ways. Continued Good Luck!

wow, Awseome, some very nice shots there. Those others are Panaeolus in the sphinctrinus/campanulatus complex.

Nice pictures. Nice cubes.
The other pans (I believe) are edible and nonactive.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Either way nice pics in their natural setting !!!

Nice finds, man!

If those Paneolus mushrooms print black, then they're active. They don't look like they'd have a black spore print, and even if they did, I wouldn't hassle with collecting them because you need a lot to trip off of.

They're most likely not edible, but they won't kill you; they'd just give you EXPLOSIVE diarrhea. Like I said earlier, if they've got a black spore print, then you're good to go.

wrong. Just because the spore print is black, they're not necessarily active.

There are plenty of non-active Pans that have black spore prints... like antillarium or sphinctrinus.

The most common (known) active Pans are Panaeolus subbalteatus, and Panaeolus (Copelandia) cyanensis. Everything else is pretty much not worth messing around with. (I know there are exceptions here... I just can't think of them off the top of my head, and they're not as common AFAIK)

one of the two in the first pic looks like a pan subb, though.

They could be mildly active, but like Pinhead said, there's plenty of inactive pans.

First pic most definately arent panaeolus, they were meaty and white underneath. The next pic though is what i thought might be subbs, there were a lot of very similar brown ones comin out the poo.
