Breeding a plant with itself.
    #8214940 - 03/30/08 02:40 PM (16 years, 2 days ago)

My girlfriend's parents had given me a Hibiscus that was slowly dying inside their house. They told me it had not flowered in years.

Well, after about 6 mouthes in my possession, BAM! flowers everywhere. I do not know much about breeding plants, so when there were 2 flowers at once, I rubbed them together to pollinate each other, and didn't think much about it afterwards.

Well, the flowers dropped, and yesterday my girl says "did you see the seed pods" I said NO!, went and checked them out. And there are now 2 seed pods on the 2 flowers I had rubbed.

Will these seeds be viable?

Most likely yes, but you may get some variety in the offspring. (i.e. different flower color, leaf shape, growth habit, etc.)
I take it you are speaking of tropical hibiscus, not the hardy northern types.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perfect_flower#Terminology

"Bisexual - or perfect flowers have both male (androecium) and female (gynoecium) reproductive parts, including stamens, carpels, and an ovary. Flowers that contain both androecium and gynoecium are called androgynous or hermaphroditic. Examples of plants with perfect or bisexual flowers include the lily, rose, and most plants with large showy flowers, though a perfect flower does not have to have petals or sepals. Other terms widely used are hermaphrodite, monoclinous, and synoecious. A complete flower is a perfect flower with petals and sepals."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hibiscus no clue what species yours is, however since they have large showy flowers, it is likely it can pollinate itself.

Also, if there are seeds, then they are probably viable, because they weren't, the seeds wouldn't even form - kinda like how peppermint doesn't form seeds because it is sterile

From these seeds, recessive traits will emerge. If they are less than desirable, you can weed them out through selective breeding.

In the end, you will be left with the perfect plant, by your standards!
