pressure cooker problems
    #8211841 - 03/29/08 07:36 PM (16 years, 21 days ago)

im pretty new to all this and have never used a pc prior to my new hobby so im not totally sure how they should look during operation. All the jars from my first batch turned out moldy so im thinking it might be the pc. There is a lot of steam coming out around the handles and the counterweight is not jiggleing and water just kind of dribbles out around it, so im guessing it is not reaching the right pressure and prob caused the contams. I could be wrong and this could be normal for them:confused:. The pc is like 20-30 years old but has only been used twice from what im told and the gasket looks pretty new, no cracks or anything. If not does anyone have an idea whats wrong with the pc? Thank you

there should be no steam leaking out near the handles. it sounds like you've got a bad seal (or gasket).

I'm betting it's a Mirro PC. I had the same kind of problem with mine. You can try to replace the gasket and see if that works. The steam should only be coming through the vent where the weight sits. If it's not jiggling during operation, then you aren't PC'ing and might as well boil your jars. I believe the weight is supposed to jiggle 2-3 times a minute when the pressure is correct.

I would highly recommend putting some money aside and eventually getting an All American PC if you plan on doing this hobby for a while. You won't regret it.

What kind of PC?
Take the gasket out and clean the grove with a bamboo skewer and soap. Bits of rubber from old gaskets can mess things up for you
When storing it don't keep it shut.
Put the lid on upside down so the gasket isn't always squished.
Wash it then lube the gasket with a bit of sunflower oil or cooking oil and work it back into the groove.
If it still leaks try flipping the gasket upside down and running it again.
If it's still leaking buy a new gasket.
Tighten the screws holding the handles on...remote possibility there is a leak there, never seen it but who knows.
Look online for "presto" they make pressure cookers, they have the instruction books online and it will apply to your cooker since it uses a weight.
I won't go into basic operation here since it's available in the presto books online.
Any other questions feel free to ask or PM me.

Pricey but good quality I hear.
I never tried it but since it is a metal to metal seal with no gasket (is that right?) I'd fear scratching the mating surfaces and ruining it.
Personally I use Presto, they're generally looked on as the retarded step child of all American but I have 3 and they all work perfectly.
My oldest one is almost 60 years old.
I even cook food in them!

You can pick up a huge one for $80

yeah, i use a very nice AA 25qt. the metal-to-metal seal isn't tooo fragile and i try to use some petroleum jelly to keep the surfaces protected.

Leftysuprise You can order fittings, weights, and inserts from presto.
New gaskets come with a new over pressure relief in the box.
Their website has an order page and a phone number to order from.

Yes, metal to metal seal and not much maintenance required. The pressure gauge needs to be replaced, along with the overpressure plug every few years, but that's about it. The only regular maintenance I do is cleaning it and rubbing vegetable oil where the metal to metal seal is. They will last virtually forever and they hold their value much better than other PC's.

I hear Presto's are good, but I made the mistake of buying a Mirro. That thing sucked ass and not even replacing the gasket fixed the leaking problem.

If it kinda rattles around in it's grove it may be dried out, check it for cracks compression or wear.
Gaskets on a presto have to be pretty much wiggled in, not much room around them at all...not sure about mirro though, sorry.

You can get new presto gasket kits at home hardware too ...about $11 for the gasket and new overpressure safety relief valve.
write down your model number before you go.
nice site by the way, good for the hard to find stuff.

Is the steam coming out of some sort of lock?
There is a peg on mine in the handle that gets forced up by the steam, this prevents it from being opened under pressure.
yours probably has something similar and I'd guess it needs a gasket too.
if you can get it out clean/wash/lube it and flip it if it still doesn't seal.
It'll keep you working till you can track down a new seal.
I've seen some people seal them with silicone but I think that isn't safe.

the gasket seems like its perfectly fine. the steam looks like it is coming out of the handle where it attaches to the top of the pc. Mine has the same kind of peg i believe peter, maybe this is what is causing it.
