nutrient addition for incubation
    #8210289 - 03/29/08 01:20 PM (16 years, 3 days ago)

I thought Id try an experiment to see if I could improve mycelium development. I considered the composition of psilocybin in my decision on what to try. So anyway I added a teaspoon of yeast energizer to enough standard pf substrate to make 6 half pint cakes and sterilized like usual.
Results: 1 week of growth looks like 2, an incredible difference! Has anyone else tried such a thing?
Yeast energizer contains DAP, biotin, MgSO3, and vitamin B complex. I'll update as things progress.  :mushroom2:

I've never tried it.
But was wondering if the Yeast Energizer
is the same as Yeast Nutrient?
I mistakenly bought Fermax Yeast Nutrient when
looking for Nutritional Yeast.
I was later told by a Brew Shop it was
only nutrients for yeast.

Are you running a negative control alongside your experimental jars? Next time try making six of each simultaneously so you are absolutely 100% sure of the cause for differences in growth that can't be due to some random environmental variable.

yeast energizer has a little more in it than yeast nutrient. I will do a control batch next time, sorry I didn't this time . I will do it for science sake. a very good point. I am going by experience.

This seems like it could go places. I've read good things about spirulina.

Actually I was hoping to improve potency. My initial results were a surprise.

Ive never tried Yeast energiser, but i am very fond of adding yeast extract (marmite) to my experiments. If you consider that yeast itself is a fungus, the cells must have every component necissary for formation of more fungal cells. I like the idea of the accumulated micronutrients too, going directly into the mycellium. I have a sneaky suspicion that the media we are using BRF/Straw/Rye Grain are too pure and refined for optimal growth. what about all those essential B vitamins, amino acids etc? surely they can't all be present in one foodstuff.

This especially goes for karo LC's btw, I am almost 100% Sure that karo doesn't have everything necissary for good mycellial growth, but it seems to work despite this...

Will get back to you with the results of my experiment in 2 weeks time.

If I can find the yeast energizer, I will try it out. My jars are almost 100% now so as soon as I get the cakes out of them I will do half with the yeast energizer and half just regular PF jars.
I will add my results here also.
Peace.
And thanks for the idea.

Where do you get maca root powder? A health food store?

Well, I've had two flushes so far with extremely healthy and vigorous mushrooms. No cake contamination once in the terrarium. I did notice an improved potency and I actually tripped mildly on one dry gram. I thought that was pretty good.
My result: Yeast energizer actually was beneficial both in strength, vigor and potency.
I invite anyone with good experience to try my experiment again with a negative control and give your results.    :cubie:

Here's a pic:

I wouldn't waste my money on health food store additives - sure you might see some effect (growth rate, and maybe increased potency) but is it actually worth blowing lots of $$ on?

Go with yeast extract if anything since its cheap - but I would shy away from any other additives such as amino acid powders, etc.

nobody can warrant an increase in potency; yeast add nutrient content.
