cloning shortcuts?
    #8207968 - 03/28/08 07:31 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

I know that you guys dont like shortcuts and the easy half-assed way - BUT I do. Especially when it would dramatically reduce the chances of contaminating everything while Im not really setup well here yet.

Is it possible to just yank a bit of mycellium from a freshly birthed cake and throw it into a fresh jar and expect it to continue growing in the new substrate?

Yes, but it wouldn't be a clone unless the original mycelium was from an isolate or cloned specimen. If the myc was came from a multispore injection, you'll get multiple substrains.

Also, if you aren't doing the transfer in ideal conditions (glovebox, flow hood) your chances for contamination can actually increase.

that's essentially grain to grain.

and yes you need a sterile environment.
