Soiless mix question...
    #8198178 - 03/26/08 07:03 PM (15 years, 11 months ago)

Im trying out a soiless mix that I found online, but when I watered my plant it became really spongy and held water. Is this normal?

2 parts peat moss
2 parts vermiculite
1 part worm casings
1 part perlite

I'd fluff that up a bit, go buy an aeration soilless mix really cheap or dump more perlite in there or something.

i tried mixing in more perlite to no avail. So i started over and tried mixing 1 part worm casings to 2 parts vermiculite and 1 part perlite; just as bad. Every soiless mix i try just turns into mud with shitty drainage.
fuck soiless mixes, im going back to dirt.

Yes and yes.

Personally I combine a huge bag of special aeration soilless with a bag of foxfarm ocean forest and it's given me the best medium I've liked so far.

Ditch the vermiculite. It's for water retention and when you're mix is 50% verm it's going to be a soggy mess.

Get some fox farm ocean forest and mix it 3 parts ocean forest to 1 part extra perlite.

I just started using sunshine mix number 4 and it holds water like a mother fucker but I have to tell you the plants seem to be loving the fuck out of it. I know from what I'm seeing it may be a while before soil is used again.

I finally just dumped in a whole bag of perlite; still holds water a bit, but the plants seem to be enjoying it.

And Magash: Fucking beautiful plants
