Subbs! Finally!-so i thought
    #8180567 - 03/22/08 05:35 PM (16 years, 12 hours ago)

Or... two of them!
I have been searching high and low for the last few days. Ive even fallen in quicksand. I have blisters the size of the toes they are on. And finally... I believe I have found my first subs. Im so excited! But feel free to squash my bubble so I dont make myself or someone sick! Haha...

I covered every inch of the local horse race track. Most of the grass was way too high for myself to get lost in, with park rangers driving around poking at my paranoia and all. But I did find these two, sticking out of horse crap and some straw. They seem to be bluing just a bit from where Ive picked them. Black gills.

Oh, in case you havent been exposed to my other lame posts, I live in Humboldt County.

Oh, and I found this doodie burried in rotting poopy hay. I dont blame you guys if you find it impossble to ID. Its pretty wrecked. Spore print turns jet f-ing black, like ink.

First off:
"subs" = Psilocybe subaeruginosa
"subbs" = Panaeolus subbalteatus

Unfortunately, what you have is one of three "toothed" margin species of Panaeolus, either P. campanulatus, P. sphinctrinus, or one of the P. papilionaceus variants.

The second photo pictured is something in the "Inky Cap" or deliquescing group, probably Coprinellus or Coprinopsis.

Really? Caus looking up those names, I've read on all of them that they are mildly psychoactive.

The "BOOKS" says some of the lawnmower mushrooms are mildy active.....recomended dosage 75 to 150 good sized specimens............The key here being "SOME" are active ,meaning ,most are not active......I would listen to CureCat over the "BOOKS".

Ahhh, okay. Yeah, I didn't doubt curecat's advice... just wanted to look up info on em to know what I found... and when I read "some" I thought maybe he was just playing it safe for my health. But that makes sense. Thanks guys.

Where in humboldt do you live wyattb? Unfortunately the weather seems like it's gunna take another plunge soon.

I just moved back out here. Away in hell (AZ) for the last 10 years. Happy to be back. Ancy as hell for spring to.... spring forth.

Yup, same as wyatts' photos.

I used to hunt subbs in SoCal with great success, but they do not like NorCals cooler weather.
Up here in the Bay Area I've only found the "toothed" Panaeolus in dung, and on lawns I've found thousands of Panaeolina foenisecii, but only 5-10 P. subbalteatus since I moved here.... and I have spent a lot of time looking, and they were far more easy to find in SoCal.

Though, AngryShroom found a really sweet patch of subbs as far north as Santa Cruz. The photos are just spectacular.

As far as psychoactivity of those "toothed" Panaeolus and P. foenisecii, the only supporting evidence is anecdotal (and few positive accounts, at that!)... So until there has been some reliable chemical analysis that supports the claim, I'm going to say they are inactive.
