I'd like to make my apartment into a garden

How do I get started? How do I find out what types of houseplants won't kill my pets? I'd like to grow vegetables and stuff but I'll have to hang the pots from my ceiling because of my dogs. I like the thought of having a bunch of plants hanging from the ceiling but I'm not sure what I have to do to help this project succeed. I'm not very knowledgable about growing plants despite my love for them. Is it possible to get hanging pots that won't leak everywhere?

I've been thinking about getting some chives going because they taste awesome and they grow well in the shade, that and I can never find them in the store.

You're right; I guess I should start with the basic herbs and then move onto other vegetables. I'd also like to get an indoor fruit tree going. Grow my own berries...
Eventually I'd like to have spinach, kale, cucumber, red pepper, etc...
It would be sweet to have an indoor pineapple tree.

My moms got all sorts of herbs growing inside (not my favorite one though), she's also got the green leafy's going on with 2 of these.
I'm not really sure if the energy one of these consumes is worth it, but she's a gadget nut.

I eat so many greens I'm not sure if I could keep up with my own demand. But the most important thing to me is that I become self-sufficient with my own food. One of these days, I'm gonna have a farm...
...in the meantime I will make the best with the space I have. I was thinking my apartment would just look so much better if there were more growing things everywhere.

If you use bigger pots that are heavier (also not cheap) it would be harder for your dogs to knock them over, and I dont think theyd be eating your plants? And theres probably some hanging pots that have an extra piece attached to the bottom to catch water, that can be emptied by tipping the pot sideways. I have normal pots that have those, im sure the hanging ones could have them too.
As for what plants im not sure. Do you plan on using a lighting system, or just using windowsill light?
Sinicuichis a nice little ornamental to grow & easy to obtain.

WEll, I can add more light if need be. Originally I was thinking about getting a high powered HPS light and turning my three season porch into a four season garden. But I'd like the garden to be all throughout my apartment.
Thanks for your reply.

Well, if you have a porch with good sunlight, id bring the HPS inside, to take care of plants that cant handle your outdoor weathering. Im sure you can find plants that dont need much sun, and have them hanging around the house, and have the plants that need good light under the HPS and/or outside, cactis have been fun since ive started growing them, and i never thought id say that when i first started. What kind of plants are you looking to grow? Strictly herb/fruits, or a full blown ethno garden?

I've had a simular idea... however, mine may be differant
my input is... that cells do produce CO2 at night.. and that can be hazardous to your health if your apartment is a jungle...
I thought about it... never really got around it...
it takes a really large amount of plants to displace breathable oxygen though.....

I have yet to use the knowledge i learn on this site... hee hee i should patent this!

Both! I'd like to grow plants that I can use, including my own fruit and veg, plus lots of ethno plants.

Well if you have access to hps, and outdoors, id say you can grow almost anything you want. Just with each plant do little growing research to find out about soils, foods, light for that plant.
To get started, if i were you id probably start off with outdoors, and get a few plants going outside, and then just keep adding plants & finding plants that dont need much light to start hanging around the house. And just keep adding plants as you find what plants your looking to grow. Soon enough your house would be full of plants.
The plants im growing that I would reccomend are kanna, kratom, cacti, khat (I havent gotten this one yet its in the mail as I type, but i believe it to be one of the stronger ethnos), if growing cacti then pereskiopsis (grafting is very fun ).
Sinicuichis are easy to get and make a nice ornamental imo.
I started wormwood seeds, you might be interested in wormwood, not only because its an absinthe component, but because its a natural pesticide. Tobacco can be used as a pesticide too.
Also, something to remember when your choosing seeds/cutting when your buying your kratom/khat and a few others.
The alkaloids in these plants dont really start getting potent until the 3rd year. So if you start from seed, you can expect to have alot of that plant, but putting alot of time before you can use them. Buying cuttings will give you a plant the age of the mother. So youl get potency right away. But have only x amount of cuttings/plants.

i used to have hundreds of tropicals in my apartments and now have everything in a greenhouse except for the hoyas. some really good unusual houseplants are of course trichocereus species, passiflora caerulea,p. trifasciata,p. belotii,p. vitifolia,p. coriacea,p. auriculata. banana trees are easy to grow indoors. hoyas are easy. salvia divinorum of course. jasminium sambac is another good one. obviously i like scented flowering plants. you can get hanging pots with built in trays at most garden centers. the nice thing about the passion vines is that they do well in hanging pots as do hoyas and jasmine. remember to mist your plants every time you walk by them and keep the temperature pretty constant around 70-75 for best growth and to keep flower buds from aborting. try to keep a high humidity too. you can get a meter that reads humidity and temperature at most stores. if you plan on an hps, it will dry out the room. i've also used the humidifiers they make for breathing with a 2 gallon resevoir that constantly send out a thick fog. use a fan to spread it farther. a vet clinic will have a list of toxic houseplants. kartuz sells nice plants online and they get them to you pretty fast. nobody will ship in the winter though. they're probably starting to ship now though for the hardier tropicals.

I've heard that before but I haven't found any proof of it. The dark independent reactions turn CO2 into glucose at night, I'm pretty sure they don't release it.
I have a small orange tree in my house. Buddha’s hand are also pretty cool fruiting trees. If you're worried about pets digging in them you can put mesh wire around the base of the pot, leaving an opening for the plant of course. Just check them to make sure they don't start to rust and replace them when they do.
Although they're not vegetables, spider plants are good if you want an easy plant to take care of. They reproduce quickly too so you could buy one and end up with 20. Ivy is also a good plant. Ficus' are also good house plants. All of these are easy to grow and are considered good air filters.
Other plants that make good houseplants are Wandering Jew (lol), gloxinia, prayer plants, boston ferns, mimosa pudica, orchids, sprengers asparagus, begonias, zebra plants...aaand I'm gunna shut up now. Usually if you go to a nursery you can ask them what would make good house plants and what's toxic to pets. And they could also let you know what kind of fruits could grow in house conditions.

Wow, all this time I thought I would have to move to the jungle, but now I'm realizing that I can just make one of my own in my apartment. How freeing!

not really freeing though since you have to be there to care for them every day. it's more like slavery.
