Novato house fire reveals marijuana farm

A Novato woman was facing drug charges Thursday after firefighters extinguishing an electrical fire discovered a small marijuana farm in her Grove Lane home.

Lisa Engels, 47, was arrested on suspicion of marijuana cultivation and cocaine possession.

Firefighters were summoned to the residence at 90 Grove Lane just before 6 p.m. Wednesday after fire was discovered in a converted garage. A bypassed Pacific Gas and Electric Co. meter, in which occupants tapped into electricity at the source to illegally power the home, may have sparked the blaze.

The fire was extinguished and the house sealed off until members of the Marin County Major Crimes Task Force could obtain a warrant, task force Sgt. Bruce Baker said.

Task force members entered the home after midnight and seized between 120 and 150 immature marijuana plants and a small amount of cocaine. The infant plants, the largest estimated to be 1 to 2 feet tall, had no buds. The street value was undetermined Thursday, authorities said.

The setup featured grow lights, fertilizer and an irrigation system, but it was considered modest compared with more elaborate cultivation operations, officials said.

"It was very, very basic - not too sophisticated, but enough to get a little grow going," Baker said.

Engels denied responsibility for the plants, Baker said. The task force is seeking a second resident of the home for questioning.

It wasn't the first time firefighters have stumbled across cultivation operations in the city.

Last summer, a rental house at 1208 Chase St. was severely damaged in a fire linked to a bypassed PG&E meter. Police said they found 75 marijuana plants, cultivation equipment and 100 pounds of packaged marijuana in the home. But the packaged marijuana turned out to be stalks, leaves and other plant remnants, not the chemically potent buds, authorities said.

After learning that the occupant was a renter, police obtained a search warrant for 682 Olive Ave., a home the man was leasing around the corner. Police found another 30 marijuana plants and more cultivation equipment inside.

Prosecutors did not file charges, however, saying they were convinced the plants were for medicinal purposes.

California's medical marijuana law, the Compassionate Use Act, grants patients and caregivers some immunity to grow marijuana for medical use.

That's what you get for stealing electricity I guess.

Do you really think they're the two most common ways to get busted? I'm inclined to think snitches are in the top two.
