Randy Rhoads' solo between "Revelation (Mother Earth)" and "Steal Away the Night" is the best I've heard ever.

Incidentally, he is also my favorite guitarist...

i decided about a week ago that my favorite solo is the solo from don't fear the reaper. it's a perfect solo.

in the past i probably would have cited some overly long trey solo or some such similar solo, but i realized awhile ago that the best solos are the shorter ones. with less time to solo you are forced to arrange more specifically and i think it's a better demonstration of creativity as a guitarist when you write a good solo as opposed to just having a loose frame work to improvise over top of. being forced to squeeze your solo into a short section of the song makes you have to pick and choose which parts to include and is a better overall gage of your song writer ability and your particular "ear" for good music. plus a good short solo, if done well, is so much sweeter and emotionally relatable than a long noodlely solo. i'm not saying that i don't like long solos anymore, because i still do, but i've grown to appreciate an artists ability to be simplistic yet expressive at the same time. it's harder then it sounds, and it adds more overall depth imo.

Conversely, I really appreciate the long solos where the guitarist knows when NOT to play. It's more about pouring as much emotion into each note as possible. Maggot Brain is one of those, the most powerful notes in my mind are when he goes back to the bent E at the start of the chord progression.

Quoth the Wikipedia on Maggot Brain:
Quote:

According to legend, George Clinton, under the influence of LSD, told Eddie Hazel to play the first half of the song like his mother had just died and to play the second half as if he had found out she was alive (other variants of the story suggest that he was simply told to play as if he had found his mother dead.) The result was the 10-minute guitar solo for which Hazel is most fondly remembered by many music critics and fans. Though several other musicians began the track playing, Clinton soon realized the power of Hazel's solo and faded them out so that the focus would be on Hazel's guitar (the band can only truly be heard during the end of the song, and even then, it is barely audible.) The entire track was recorded in one take. The solo is played in a pentatonic minor scale in the key of E over another guitar track of four simple arpeggios. Hazel's solo was played through a fuzzbox and a wah pedal; some sections of the song utilize a delay effect.

Another good example is Pink Floyd's "Echoes", "Shine On", or any of David Gilmour's solos for that matter.

Hendrix's Machine Gun from the Live at the Filmore East CD.
Metheny's solos on his group's CD The Way Up are pretty awesome. The whole CD is pretty fucking awesome actually.
There's also a good Scofield solo on this CD my friend had on in the car, I think it was some newer Hancock album.

Edit: And of course Maggot Brain. I know it's been said, but I absolutely love that song. Anyone who's seen me post in a guitar song thread knows that's true.

Yeah, Maggot Brain was on a Funkadelic CD, not PFunk (such a blurred line) which was actually titled Maggot Brain. Not one of their strongest CDs, but that track is fucking amazing.

George Clinton is the leader of Parliament Funkadelic.
Honestly I'm not too sure the difference between Parliament and Funkadelic. I wanna say Parliament was like almost a black doowop group, and Funkadelic was a band. Your best bet is to look it up on Wikipedia, but they are pretty much all the same. If you see George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic live they'll play shit from Funkadelic CDs (Maggot Brain for example), shit from Parliament CDs, and shit from Parliament Funkadelic CDs.

Either way you cut it, it's awesome shit. Keep looking into them, you won't be disappointed.

Wiki told me:

Funkadelic was a famous African American music band most prominent during the 1970s. It and Parliament, also led by George Clinton, began the Funk music culture of that decade.

so it is two different bands. Funkadelic is one. and Parliment is another(which George Clinton is vocals) so i guess like you said they worked together a lil, and did eachothers stuff. either way good vibes
