Humboldt Find ID Please
    #8164440 - 03/18/08 09:59 PM (16 years, 14 days ago)

Just found these on the side of the highway near the outskirts of Fortuna (Humboldt County, CA). Sorry I could not get a picture of their natural habitat. They were in a low grassy area, with a moo moo field nearby. We had a very rainy day, then sunny, and today was misty. I went out looking for Amanitas, and instead came home with these. Any ideas guys? Ill get different pictures upon angle request if you need anything else.

Alright, those look like some type of Stropharia. For northern california, cow fields are not the place to look. For this spring look up Panaeolus subbalteatus, and for next fall look up Psilocybe cyanescens.

Yeah, I'd go with S. riparia as well.

I did not get a print. I'm unaware of how to take one... I'm very new to this. =) But damn is it interesting...

If you don't feel like repeating the obvious, its okay, i'll do my research for next time.

After reading a few pages on Riparia, seems like you guys are at least damn close, if not on =) Thanks for your help/pondering =)

The redwoods here may not be full of actives, but they are an explorer's dream. I found some EXTREMELY bizzare mushrooms out there... loved it. Wish I could go back out today, but it's raining pretty good...

Hey, no biggie! Always get a specimen that is not mushy or rotting, Remove the stipe/pop off the cap, lay flat down on white typing paper ( or dark paper if spores appear light), take a glass, make the inside a bit moist by rubbing water along the inside, then place over your mushroom! It helps with identification and is just neat looking, anyway! Sometimes it takes a few hours to 24 hours to get a nice print and good luck!
