Horse shit? Oh Shit!
    #8158095 - 03/17/08 04:32 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

My friends monkey was pasteurizing some horse shit when he realized the thermometer didn't work. He used a different thermometer and saw that the internal temperature of the horse shit (in mason jars) was over 140F. He turned it down as soon as he saw this (about 10-15 minutes later).

My question is, should he dump this shit and start with some new fresh shit?

If it didn't go over 170F the poo is still in pasteurization range. So no, tell that monkey to keep going and get it up to 165F and keep it there for an hour.

Well, he doesn't really know what the temperature was at it's peak. The thermometer said above 180F. The water that the mason jars were immersed in was at a full boil.

So, if it was above 180F, he should start over with "fresh" shit?

If it was in between 140-160F the manure is ok

I personally wouldn't chance it. You can simply throw the manure you just pasteurized on a tarp and allow it to sun dry or just dry it out in the garage. Temps at 180 or greater are more than likely to kill just about all bacteria, including beneficial.

140-160F to be on the safe side.
No if that's all you have..Don't...but treat it like you would an LC because it is now more prone to contaminants then monkeys with AIDS

thanks!
the monkey will start some new shit up soon
:sun:
so, will this pasteurized shit be usable after it's been dried and whatnot?
or is all the bacteria gone and therefore useless?

yea man if you cooked that a little too hot, its still fine, just a little more prone to contams than if it still had that good bacteria that helps fight off other contams.
