poppies or salvia?
    #8100805 - 03/04/08 08:29 AM (16 years, 1 month ago)

I have a 6x13 spot in my backyard that i previously grew a ton of morning Glorys. This year i want to decide if i am going to plant poppies and Leonotis leonurus or salvia and Leonurus sibericus. I am trying to get the maximum yield with little space. Suggestions on other possible psychedelic plants are welcome.

split the area into two..a nice salvia patch(if its the right humidity where you live.0and a few rows of neat and tidy poppies.

I disagree. Salvia can thrive in any humidity if its been acclimatised.

salvia can be trained down to a lower humidity if you know what you're doing.

hmmmmm
i am more relaxed now
a more consderate answer is needed for the critical peeps on this forum...
think about where you live....
if it is a place which can hold the plants you choose easily then salvia and poppies would be cool....
humidity is important but acclimatised salvia will work....
if you can grow them outside then go for it

Just dig up all the soil real loose, whatever you choose to plant will grow better.

I don't think I've ever seen someone grow a salvia in the ground (besides maybe one person in the tropics). It would be great to see someone do it.

From the information I've gathered most poppy pods produce 10-30mg of opium each, but I've already got two salvia plants in the closet and they bush out wonderfully and have good leaf output. I've decide to space poppies 3'' apart each and put 5 salvia plants outside and hopefully still have enough room for about 3-4 wild dagga plants does this sound good?

I believe it's 80mg of opium per pod I'd definately go with opium over salvia.

Maybe i was wrong, I know to grow papaver somniferum, but does the strain make a difference in yields like hens and chicks or Persian whites?

well if you look at some of the strains like collosus w.e vs turkish..... the size is like a marble vs a bowling ball.

I hear the small ones have more potency per weight but the size obviously off sets that.

it's a good advice, but just digging won't do it, the first rain will make the soil the way it was before again...

you dig the dirt loose, then cover with grass clippings(or whatever organic material you have avaliable, preferably hay or straw)

that should keep the soil real loose... hm, and don't burry the grass clippings, just spread them across the surface.

Mixing in compost or some organic matter to keep the soil from compacting as much is definetely the way to go.

use the whole spot for poppies and pot the salvia plants, indoors, outdoors whatever its up to you. but plant poppies in every damn inch of that ground space.

grow some dagga in your neigbors yard or something if you cant live without it

I've never heard of a poppy head getting bowling ball size :crazy2:. I've only grown them once and they got about the size of a golf ball, but i used poppy seeds from a baking isle in a store to see if they were opium poppies or not:smirk:
