Sociology?

Are any of you Shroomerites taking a sociology course in college/university? I'm beginning to look at different educational opportunities, and sociology really sounds like it's down my alley (trying to understand the world we live in, how we affect it through interaction and different conditions, etc).
Any thoughts on the general coursework, career paths, etc would be greatly appreciated!

That's the problem, it seems to cover so many subjects that I have no idea what I would do with the degree as far as a career path goes. All that I know now is that understanding the world and complex social interactions is one of the only things that truly interests me. A career path is of little importance to me now, as even the idea of most careers bores me and would not motivate me to complete the course work. Right now I would be leaning towards a career path that betters the world in one way or another. Some form of social work, possibly...
Are you taking sociology?

I already have a degree and I am currently going to graduate school. My advice from someone who's already been down that path is to find a program of specialization. Try to avoid these liberal arts degrees that are so wide that you'll have a difficulty finding a job with after you're done. Find something practical or plan on going to graduate school. The more specialized you are, the better off you'll be. I recommend picking a general profession first. Do not be fooled by the mentality of "oh, just get any four year degree and you'll be fine." That is not true - it is a myth in today's economy.

Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it. I've just sent an e-mail to the coordinator of the department at the local college/university asking if I could schedule a day to come in and look in on a beginners class, read through the textbooks and talk to the professors. I suppose I will see where that takes me, and if I'm interested I can begin looking at a specific role that I can aspire to fulfill.

Sociology is a really interesting degree but I would be wary of going into it unless you plan on going to graduate school, if a well paying post collegiate job is what you're looking for.

Well it sounds like you have no college experience/credits thus far. Which is good as you will have time to decide. I am a double Major. Anthropology and Sociology. At the moment I plan on graduate school where I will be specializing in some field of Anthropology. I'm preparing an abstract to submit to the AAA to attend the conference in the fall. I believe it is in San Fransisco.
As far as Sociology I see a lot of people in those classes are specializing in criminal justice or social work. Neither interests me, although I could see myself doing some social work to pay some bills.
The fact is, specialization, graduate school, and experience will all be needed. Simply a lot of hard academic work, but in the end you can be called Dr. =P Give it some time and think about it as it sounds like you have time and if you have any other questions ask.
