HEPA air purifier...jig?
    #8052567 - 02/21/08 04:23 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

I own one of these Honeywell HEPA air purifiers and want to try to make a jig of somesort to fit over it and direct it into a rectangular output sort of like a flowhood. It filters 99.7% of particles down to .3 microns so I know it's good enough, and I'm thinking of how I would make this jig.

I'm thinking of maybe some sort of thick plastic that I can just fold into a circle and then melt another piece to it or something.

Any ideas?
Here's the unit:

Also, I made a still-air box today so I could inoculate some rye I pc'd this morning. If I could get this "flowhood" to work, how long can the rye sit uninoculated before it's unusable? I have two 1/4 inch holes with tyvek micropore taped onto quart jars.

What model is that (specifically)? I'm doubting that model filters down to .3 microns. Mainly because flow hood HEPA filters are several inches thick in order to achieve those numbers. The other problem is that you need laminar flow. You need around 100cfm air flow evenly over your work area. I doubt that setup could accomplish that, but I've seen crazier setups that people claim work.

It's a model 50250 and it takes #24000 filters, and the filters are huge.

I called earlier them to make sure and they said it filtered to .3 microns (forgot to mention that).

This website says it's 250cfm.

250cfm is way too high, but the filtration sounds good. You may be able to set up a thick prefilter to increase the static pressure and decrease the flow, but I still don't know how well it would work. If you want some good information on flow hoods and how they work here is a good link:

That may give you some ideas on how to modify your setup to work. Good luck

where does the air come out? that ring around the top or all around the sides?
Anyway as for laminar flow stack up a bunch of coroplast.
It's like cardboard but made of plastic.
you see election signs and garage sale signs made of it.
a few inches thick should get things flowing the right way.
Cut a hole in a box and cover the output, one side of the box is your new plastic flow thing. in front of that is your work area. Make sure you clean the whole thing well, everything between the filter and your work.
Good luck

The air comes from the ring on top and the input is all around the sides.

The coroplast idea sounds great, I'll see if I can go find some.

If you got a plastic supply place near by you can get 4 by 8 foot sheets of it for about $11.
Any color you like too!
One sheet cut into 2 inch wide strips would make a laminar flow area 2 feet by 4 feet (1/4 inch thick sheet)
cuts easy too.

I suggest leaving it alone and just run it 24/7 in the designated "lab room". It will never work like a true Laminar flowhood no matter what you do to it. I would spend my time and money on building a nicely thought out glove box. Between the glove box and your air purifier you should be golden!

This comes up at least once per week. They are not suitable for use as a flowhood or we wouldn't spend $500 and up on real flowhoods.

You can run it in the room to help control dust, but be sure to shut the thing off when you work in your glovebox. They create lots of currents and will add to your contamination problems.
