Another lighting question, opinions needed T5/HPS
    #8039943 - 02/18/08 08:22 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

so i am very uninformed when it comes to artificial lighting. currently i get by growing my plants with a few t5s, t12s and CFLs. i want to upgrade and supplement my lighting with either one of these:

- 150W HPS 16,000 lumens

- T5 2ft. 4 bulbs full spectrum 2 X 6500° K (blue) & 2 X 3000k (red) (96W)

my questions are :

- will the HPS be good enough for vegetative and flowering states?
- will te HPS light need to be cooled if running in a 70F-80F environment?

- basically what are the pros and cons of both systems, considering it will be the only system?

btw both are very close in price.

any help is greatly appreciated, thanks

HPS lighting adds a week to the normal growth rate but the final harvest is much larger and stronger. Flourescents cause legy plants and the lights have to be constantly adjusted. I grow with a 400w HPS for flowering and a 400w MH for vegatative. If I was you I would go with the HPS system. You will have to cool the room but its good to have a fan blowing in their in the first place.

so as a primary light an HPS is better for flower and even veg over the fluoro setup? my concern is if HPS is better for flowering how good is it for veg growth?

thanks

I love using HID lighting over Flourescents cause flou.s suck for any kind of growing after propagation. If your that worried about veg then get a son agro bulb. How many plants areu growing and how big is the space.

a son agro is a lamp that fits an hps ballast but has more blue light?

If u are growing plants in a 4 sq. ft. area I would reccomend a 600w light. Try this place . I order my lights from their all my lights are their cheap refurbished lamps but they are in great condition.

My HPS 400w and 400w MH cost me a total of 189.99. The lights are cheaper then most 150w lamps.

the only problem with fluoro seems to be light penetration.  they can stack up against any light with L/W but the light does not travel very far very strong :frown:  t me that seems to be the only disadvantage with fluoros that i know of.

so HPS is the ultimate system if i only have one?

it's not best for veg, but better than fluoro and better than MH for flower?

I only grow kill ass weed in my system but from all my research( did i mention im a fellow for U of I Urbana in hydroponics and indoor lighting) HPS is the best. There is a new system that is being researched(by me) but the cheapest setup(mine is the only one in the world) is over 15 grand. I cant give specs, all I can say is that one light using 400w is the equivlent to 4 1000w hps systems. The system is full spectrum.

thanks again,

so would it be worth getting an hps system and using enhanced light bulbs for better spectrum, or is it not worth it?

i'm glad i'm talking to the right person about this.

If u are worried about veg then get a son agro bulb for the HPS, problem is I dont think they make son agro bulbs for 150w hps. I would just get a normal hps system. Flour. cause a very large gap between internode lenght and do not mimic normal sunlight like hps bulbs do. for growing start out with a 20 hour on 4 hour off cycle. do that for 2 weeks. after that crank back the lighting period every week until u get to 12 on 12 off. keep it on that until you harvest. Those cycle parameters have never failed me.
