Phil Lesh & Friends Mardi Gras Show
    #7948177 - 01/28/08 10:23 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

Just went to it the other day. Probably the best performance I've seen of them and one of the best shows I've seen. I ate a chronic ass mushroom chocolate at the perfect time cause I started peaking right when they dropped all the balloons from the ceiling when they came back out for the second set. I danced until I nearly fainted.

Here's the set list:

Quote:

Set I:
Disc 1 (74:47)

One More Saturday Night (6:42)
Brown Eyed Women (8:10)
Pride Of Cucamonga (7:19)
Cold Black Devil (10:12)>
Golden Road To Unlimited Devotion (8:32)>
In The Midnight Hour(9:24)*
Viola Lee Blues (9:41) >
Caution (11:36)>
Viola Lee Blues (3:07)

Phil: "More music and special treats on the way!"

Costume Contest w/Phil as MC
Won by The Dancing Bear!

Set II:
Disc 2 (72:19)

Shakedown Street (11:30)> #
Iko Iko (16:36)> * # (MARDI GRAS PARADE w/Floats, Dancers, Stilt walkers, Dragons, & Costume contest participants dancing in front of the stage)
Truckin' (10:55)> * #
Jack Straw (10:03)
St. Stephen (11:02)>
The Eleven (12:09)>

Disc 3 (77:27)

Unbroken Chain (15:45)
Fire On The Mountain (11:54)>
I Know You Rider (8:42)
Morning Dew (14:02)>
Uncle John's Band (17:14)

E:
Phil w/wife of Jeff Setzekorn (who died, but saved 4 lives) doing the Organ Donor Rap (3:08)
Box of Rain (6:39)

* First time played (with this lineup)
# With Ivan Neville on Keyboards & Vocals

the second set was what was really spectacular about the show. my only issue is that i like more melodic style guitar solos that play off the melody rather than riff driven guitar playing so jackie greene isn't really my favorite addition to the band but as a vocalist he was awesome. i do prefer the joan osbourne/jimmy herring duo though.

here's the audio from the show:

Phil's voice is getting really good again. he sounds better everytime i see him. him singing unbroken chain was one of my favorite parts of the show.

Thanks for the audio.

Was in Santa Cruz and San Francisco week before last to see the Jerry Garcia Band  over two nights.
Saw Phil & Friends last at the Santa Barbara Bowl last year and they're playing great.
RatDog rocks too, even Cubensis knows what the deal is.

I like your taste in music! :tongue2: :gd_icon:

yeah this is my first time seeing them since phil's year long brea and i think they've definitely made some great improvements to the band. i saw them preform at the same mardi gras show three years ago but this one tops it by a lot. the energy was off the wall.

by the way, it was really hard to find mushrooms there but it seemed liked everyone i ran into was selling doses. there was one guy who offered me a hit for free. i told him thanks for the offer but that someone else would probably appreciate it more. he was obviously quite suprised when i declined the offer. just not too big on acid anymore, several years ago though i would have creamed my pants from such a thing.

i hear ya about feinting, i was tripping at ratdog once and i kept feeling like i'm dancing way too hard. i was panting and feeling tired but i had to keep dancing. then i thought, what if i actually faint, i'd get trampled, but then sugar mag kicked in and there was no time for thinking.

glad you enjoyed your show :gd_icon:

yeah, i was really just tripping about my how fast heart rate was.  i get paranoid about heart problems while on drugs and frequently check my pulse although i've never really had any heart problems in general.  my pulse was flying really fast but i was also dehydrated as shit which i think was the main problem.  it was really hard to get myself off the dance floor to get more water but i finally convinced myself that i really needed some.  i literally felt like my body was resonating with energy form the sound waves the band was creating and that's how i was dancing so i was really dancing vicariously through the band's and the crowd's energy (which was definitely at peak levels).

someone else got on lead guitar for set 3 who i like better than jackie greene. couldn't see who it was from where i was sitting at the time though. could it have been larry campbell taking a solo or something? eother way, i prefered their style of soloing over jackie greene's for the breif period in which they took over as lead.

man, when you're dancing and feel like fainting, you just gotta work through that shit by dancing even harder

nah, but seriously, i drink tons of water right before any show so i can wait an hour or two before needing to re-up.

not too impressed with the brown eyed women, especially the solo...just kind of bland...oh wait, there it goes!, later than usual :hehehe:, but i like the overall groove of it.  i hope the sound quality of that recording gets better throughout cause it sounds kinda hollow

looks like an awesome show

edit:  st. stephen > eleven + uncle john's band to top it off :drooling:

sugar magnolia woulda been sweet in that show

listen to the fire ont he mountain they did, you would have loved it. he put some sort of phaser on his bass so it sounds all synth when he's playing the main bass line to it plus he takes a crazy ass solo thingy somewhere in the song.

you'd probably enjoy the feedback they did during caution as well. it was a little too intense for me at the show cause it was right when i was coming up and my stomach was really hurting.
