To Change the World
    #792669 - 08/02/02 04:47 PM (21 years, 7 months ago)

Yesterday I was clever. That is why I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise. That is why I am changing myself. ~ Sri Chinmoy

To attempt to change all the imbalances of the world is a daunting, if not
impossible task. However, if each one of us makes a conscientious effort
to strive for daily balance, greet each day as if it were our last, and seek
the good in our fellow human being (as well as ourselves), the forces of
darkness would find our collective world reality an inhospitable home at best.

Peace to Everyone

I..love you, man.

Really though, I completely agree with you. Putting it into practice is what i've been trying to do.

Beautiful! There is nothing to disagree with in it, is there?

Or in the words of Todd Rundgren, "How can I change the world when I can't change myself?"

If ever a thread deserved to be a sticky in this forum this one has my vote!

Thanks for the compliments. I enjoy seeking the lighter side of life. It is far
too short as evidenced by all the atrocities within the world today. Wars
begin with simple disagreements, but at sometime during the disagreement
somebody must lay down their "arms".

Rather than focusing on why each of us differ, why not the focus be on
how we are similar as a human race?

Peace to Everyone

Speak gently. As profound as it is simple. Thanks!

Speak Gently

Speak gently to the terrorists who bombed the WTC. They are merely people who believe differently than you do.

Speak gently to the politicians who steal your freedoms as they will understand your concern and hand them back.

Speak gently to the man who broke into your house at 3 AM. Tell him in a kindly manner that he does not belong there so that he may leave.

Speak gently to the World Com executives who have stolen the public blind so that they will hear and make reparations.

I know that you mean well and I applaud your idealism. However, sometimes a shout works better than a whisper and a slap better than a touch.

And yet your post does not negate the wisdom of the prose. I think PN's main point was in the preceding paragraph. Which is true beyond measure.

For everything there is a season. But a soft answer turns away wrath. I think the path of wisdom should led us to speak softly at first. If that does not work then other measures may have to follow. If the first reply to leave your lips is a shout you probably won't be heard.

Cheers,

I think the point was that if each person "spoke gently" individually, there would be no terrorists, robbers, deceiving worldcom executives, etc.

Yes, it's something hard to imagine, but if everyone would imagine it, then what would keep it from being true?

Thanks for the wisdom. I know it works within my own life's episodes. I tend to forget how much. It stands to reason how much influence it can have on others as well.
Peace

A big IF. I once had dreams of utopia, but I realized how many selfish and/or lazy people there are in the world. Maybe it should be "Speak gently when those you are speaking to deserve it..." But then this presents a problem- how do we know who deserves it? The implementation of ideals to a world with much less than ideal standards is an arduous (if even possible) task.

I still think it's a good ideal though.

Everyone is worthy of (or deserve) being spoken gently too. Even selfish and/or lazy people are "people" in fact. Humanity is inside even the sickest of all killers. Humanity is not something shed lightly.

"People are often unreasonable, illogical and self-centered; Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies; Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you; Be honest and frank anyway.
What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight; Build anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous; Be happy anyway.
The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; Do good anyway.
Give the world your best and it may never be enough; Give the world your best anyway.
You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God; It was never between you and them anyway."

Far too many of us have a terrible inner dialogue, which is carried over into the way we
deal with our fellow human beings. Mr Mushrooms made a good point in a different post, which
is applicable here:

If someone posts something that stirs something inside of me like anger, or whatever, I quickly
look to see why that is, knowing that it is myself that needs to change.

The point being that the task of speaking gently begins within. I we can all just take a moment to
actually listen to the internal chatter, we may find that a good portion of said chatter is actually
non-productive filler for silence and in some cases, self-destructive.

Once these traits are recognized within, then we can begin to have some compassion for others who
are experiencing the same, yet are so mired in the present and future, they find it very difficult to
experience the NOW.

Being kind and gentle far surpasses verbal intercourse. For that occasional rude or ungrateful person
we may meet during our daily journey, being kind and gentle can come in the form of remaining silent
and not adding to the energy put forth by said individual.

One great use of words is to hide our thoughts. ~ Voltaire

I have always tried to carry the attitude of the world needs change, and it starts with me if nowhere else...I think that is what you are saying...

Anger is an infectious emotion, more than any other I think. Anger is the nature of evil, controling and dominating...that is why I feel it must be done away with.

Much love! Good post!

I share your sentiment, that was one of the grate teaching given to my by the shrooms, we are all brothers/sisters and all connected, to hurt another one is to hurt ourselves even the most evil are part of us.
For those who think the way of the sword is the only way let us not forget, that softness is not weakness as proven by Gandhi.
I may not be able to feel and act like this, due that I live in a sleep state most of the time but when I leave the dream world behind, every atom in my self screams that love is the only way.
The doom of man is that we forget.

Speaking gently is a cool thing to do most of the time, but when no one listens, you could as well shut the fuck up. So while I think that speaking gently is not always the best choice, shouting certainly isn't. Someone who shouts is full of hate (watch him closely).

Hate is a kind of love. When you hate someone, you grant him an important place in your life, and most assholes simply don't deserve this place. It is ok to dislike people, but hate isn't. When you dislike someone, you should ignore him. This usually works well enough for me. But then there are those whom I cannot ignore, mostly the people Swami mentioned in his post. Essentially, the people who are the reason why this planet is such a sick place to be. There seem to be some humans who enjoy ruining the show for everyone else. But I do not shout to them, nor do I speak gently. Instead, I'm spending my life looking for a clean and effective way to kill these people.

But then maybe I'm just the Aggressive_Nomad (Note to myself: change your nickname.)

Shouting = hateful person ????

I don't know... a major generalization. Nope, it must be changed.
I have no hate in my heart. Yet I shout all the time... usually NOT when I'm arguing. Sometimes the shouting is re-routed through a bullhorn with the volume set to '10'. Yeah, that type of shouting gets you trespassed from the local mall, even if you didn't say anything offensive (I think it was determined that I was "confusing shoppers" ).
