Okay to sterlize coffee?

Thinking about spawning to bulk. Coir and coffee. I want to expand some coir, mix it with coffee, and PC for 30 min. Coir is supposedly okay (no bacterial bloom), but what about coffee? Any problems foreseen here?

you can do it without sterilizing.. and it will be fine as long as you case it.. add a lil lime to the coir and it will raise the ph.. contams hate alkaline stuff..
dont sterilize it.. pasturize it...

I am not one for a big mess on the stove with bed clothes and crap. A couple of jars in the PC for 30 min and I'm good with that.
I'd really rather be safe than sorry. Does sterilizing coffe lead to bacterial bloom?

as long as the transition from the sterlizaed jars to the trays/tub is strictly kept as sterile as possible. ive successfully PCd my sub and very very carefully mixed it with my grain, once its colonized you dont have much to worry about..

well.. of course... if you sterilize it, then you wont have to worry about contams as much... but pasturizing is supposed to be better for bulk subs... just do some research... and always know, like I said, you can do it without doing any of that.. add lime to raise ph and get hydrated.. its very simple, and I just think that PC'ing a bulk sub would be a pain in the ass.. have you ever tried to sterilize jars of 10 lbs of straw and poo? Im just saying, its just a hassle to pack all the jars and sterilize them, when you can add lime or something similar to the sub to raise the ph to a level where contams wont grow.. if you sterilize, and dont add something like that, you still risk getting contaminated because low (acidic) ph is a haven for trich...

I have some jars that I want to add as much in coir/coffee to again. Or am I sandbagging? Could I use 1/3 spawn to 2/3 bulk substrate? In any case, I'm still working really small. So, it's only going to be 3-4 jars worth of coir/coffee at most.

For small amounts of sub it's really easy to pasteurise in jars. The first time I did it I calculated the timings for the size of the jars and the thickness of the glass by measuring the inside temperature with a meat thermometer. After that it is only a matter of measuring the water temperature and knowing the timings.
First Time - Fill jars with hydrated sub (you can squeeze test every handfull to get the moisture bang on) - Use or make lids with 1/4" holes in top (in the center) and stuff some polyfill in there. (allows presure release as the jars get hot) - Stick a meat thermometer through the hole in the top of one of the jars (kinda through through some polyfil) to measure the inside temp. - Put them into a big pot - You may need to weigh them down with something (I use a small 1.25kg gym weight to hold 4 jars down) - Fill up pot with water about 2/3 up the side of the jars - Stick a candy thermometer into the water. - Turn on the heat, note the time. - Get the water to about 74C (165F) and adjust heat to keep it there, note the time. - Have a look at the meat thermometer every 5 mins or so until the inside centre of your jar reaches about 65C (149F) or the hotest it gets - Once it gets there note the time. - Keep the water at 74C for another hour. - Job done
So after doing that the first time I now know the timings for my jars and can remove the meat thermometer.
So I now know my jars take 1/2 hour for the internal temp to get to where I want it. So the process is now much easier.
- Load 4 jars with sub or casing - stuff polyfill in lids and put on jars - stick em in pot, put weight on, fill pot with water, add candy thermometer - turn heat up till water hits 74C, about 10 mins - adjust heat to maintain 74C water temp. - I know the insides of my jars take 1/2 hour to get to 65C (their max), so once the water temp hits 74C I come back 1 1/2 hours later, job done.
I do this cause I use non standard jars (helmans mayonaise normally). I can also happily pasteurise Hpoo in my kitchen and all the wife sees is jars! She's happy with that!!!
