Has anyone ever seen these or photographs of these?

I looked on google images and did not find any.

Yes well according to the book "Ecology and Management of Morels Harvested From the Forests of Western North America" (which is also available online for free), pages 20-21, it says some Morels are "green", "Pits: dark gray to dark olive gray when young, olive gray to olive brownish gray in age." And under Comments: "...Some harvesters already distinguish the green species of black fire morel, calling them 'pickles.'.". And no photographs to speak of.

I was shown a picture of a "pickle" and I couldn't distinquish it from a black morel. Maybe the photography was poor but I imagine the green coloration is subtle under the best conditions.

I have a friend in W.V. that told me the same thing. He also said there's a brick red colored species that they find every now and then too. Pure brick red and purely green. I'll have to see if he has any photos of them. He's not the photographing type, so I doubt it.

I have a few pictures of greenies on my site.

Check out this thread.

I've seen some pics of those giant reds before, but unfortunately I don't have any pics of those.

Enjoy...

Hmm, yeah, they have a greenish colour.  But I definitely wouldn't call that a "green morel".  :ohwell:

Welcome to the forum Merkel.

Hi Cure Cat. Thanks for the greets.

Well I know several commercial pickers and mycologists that would disagree. These greenies... or pickles are usually found in the upper elevations typically above 5000 ft asl.

I asked one of the authors of the "Ecology and Management of Morels Harvested From the Forests of Western North America" Dave Pilz about them recently,

His reply was:

As for morels, I have said all I am going to say about their identification in that publication. Their taxonomy and characters is such a mess that I don't want to touch it again with a ten foot pole. Suffice it to say, they are all delicious.

Good stuff huh? lol

When I think of a green morel, I think of an all-green morel. Those have greenish pores. I wouldn't disagree that they are green, I just think the name is a little bit misleading.
