When I think something is stupid, this is immediately followed by the thought that I'm the one not getting it.

Things can be blatantly odd, but there's always something behind it on a level they themselves might not even be aware of.

It's a slippery slope. There's no objective meaning to understanding, especially with complex issues. How many people defend their thinking simply by implying that you don't understand what they really mean, you just don't get it...

Generally a decent enough principle, as long as you can make some decision as to what constitutes understanding.

I see things in a similar fashion as Wiccan.

To understand the misunderstandings as I put it

Well, frankly, I can say I don't really understand Scientology (because I haven't paid for access to all the literature), but that it is, in fact, stupid. I'm being serious. Sometimes, when something has a handful of keyt bullshit identifiers, it can be safely ignored. To attempt to fully understand everything we encountered would make us psychotic, but we judge by reflex. If someone says to me, "I have a machine which has no credible scientific verification outside the organization that built it, that can tell how in tune with your inner self you really are, and it is enourmously expensive to operate, requiring an eventual sum donation of as much as half a million dollars to be ultimately happy," I think, "Okay, well, that's a scam."

I don't need to read the literature on what thetans are. I don't need to consider the menace posed by this Galactic Lord Zenu. I can pretty much just say, "That sounds stupid."

Great topic!

Interestingly for me, I just saw a group in a Norwegian version of Facebook that was named "we who think Mario is better than WOW" .. I wondered for myself, who many of those people actually played WOW.. I surely never have.. But I love Mario!
Just an interesting coincidence.

I tank you for sharing the good words!

Good for you. What does child rape have to do with the topic of the post? I assume that you understand what child rape is which is probably why you are critical of it. You don't seem to be the type that would criticize something that you don't first understand.

I am not sexually attracted to children, therefore I do not understand the motivation.

Was there really a topic?

Does one need to understand motivation leading to an act in order to understand that the result of the act are wrong? Besides, you said "I will continue to criticize child rape" not "I will continue to criticize the motivation behind child rape".

In my opinion, sometimes it is better to choose NOT to understand something, such as child rape as OrgoneConclusion mentioned. Unless you are trying to expand your cicle of love to all things, then you would want to understand everything. When I understand something, I can no longer criticize it, and it becomes a part of what I am. Maybe we are using different definitions of understanding.

crumblebum says he doesn't understand Scientology - is this because Scientology is overwhelmingly hard to understand? No, I believe it's because he chooses not to understand it, because it is not worthy of any extended comprehension: understanding usually leads to empathy.

The motive is to relieve sexual or emotional tension. Just as you might like a woman to dress or act or look a certain way. Think:tongue:

That's the very opposite of my personal philosophy. I want to understand it all.

Quote:

Unless you are trying to expand your cicle of love to all things, then you would want to understand everything.

I seek to understand it all and find my peace with it. I know I will never succeed in completing that, there's just too much stuff and too little free time in a human life.

Quote:

When I understand something, I can no longer criticize it, and it becomes a part of what I am.

Some things, like OrgoneConclusion's child rape, will become an even greater wrong once you gain a better understanding of it. If you choose not to understand child rape, you'll be forever on the lookout for the old guy with the dirty beard and the cum-stained pants. Your guard will be down where it comes to older siblings, family members you knew all your life, teachers and whatnot. A parent who chooses to understand child rape will be a better and more effective guardian of their children than a parent who chooses not to spend a thought on it and restricts their image of the percieved danger to a bunch of stereotypes.

If you come to understand something better, you become a more complete person. But understanding does not mean that you have to side with it. You can choose to empathize with the architects of the holocaust for the purpose of seeing things from their perspective. Then, while you still are fully against what they did, you can see that they are not evil demons form hell but mere humans like you or I that made some wrong turns in their thinking. You can then examine whether there are similar wrong turns in your thinking. Once you find those, you can improve on yourself. This makes you a better person.

Quote:

understanding usually leads to empathy.

You can empathize with people yet be completely opposed to what they do or choose to stand for. If you're against something, don't be against it because of a shallow stereotype you have of it.

If you don't want to think about something go right ahead, but take it for me there is ALWAYS a personal reward in coming to understand something better than you did before.
