i'm sure tons of people here have been to or regularly see psychiatrists.
i've been suffering from clinical depression for a long time, and for the first time in my life, i'm getting it checked out. i preferred to face my problems myself for the longest time but i want to see what a specialist thinks now that i'm running out of options on why i feel the way i do, and maybe he can guide me into a brighter light.
the reason i'm asking this is because i understand that most therapy sessions can have a great span of time in between them - such as anywhere from 3-4 weeks. i'm curious to know if there is a basis for when doctors are allowed to or supposed to write prescriptions. i'm not trying to bum drugs. i'm just curious as to what i should expect, like whether or not help is going to come within a week or 2 or if i'll have to prove it over the course of 2 months.

I went to probably 3 or 4 different psychiatrists as a teenager and on the very first visit they always tried to prescribe something.
If you're expecting a narcotic like xanax, expect something like that to take time. But ssri's, they hand those out like candy.

they'll prescribe it, but like the xanax, it's probably going to take a little while.
I'm completely guessing here, but let's say you see him/her once a week. I would think at least 1-2 months before you get prescribed to anything decent.

They'll probably put you on an SSRI. You may or may not be helped by this, but you won't know until you try them. FWIW, they have really helped my depression. In any case, if you're looking for benzos, tell them you have severe panic attacks. It worked for me.

if you just want drugs and aren't looking to really talk to anyone, you can buy them off the internet you know?

Well, you'll probably get a prescription right away, although it usually takes a few weeks for an SSRI to work. HTH!

I'm kinda sceptical about all of these anti-depressantss, but then again, I've never been clinically depressed. I don't know what to tell you, but I advise you to not immediately start taking things that fuck with your neurochemistry. talking to someone about it can help loads, I swear. Maybe you should dry yourself out for a while, stop doing drugs? Or, reverse that, and take a heroic dose of mushrooms or acid or something to that effect, I've heard stories where the sufferer was cured of his depression after a (usually grueling) mushroom or acid trip. But I don't know anything, man, it's all up to you.

why would an anti-depressant be the last thing you'd take?
how could ayahuasca help me?

tryptophan teh precursor to 5htp can cross the blood brain barrier, then subsequently turn into 5htp and seratonin within the brain where its functional.
Well, I've only heard stories of 5HTP, so this is why I asked the OP about it.

secondly,
if your looking for a medication to solve depression
and anti-depressent is the last thing i would take.
if i were to take something it'd be ayahuasca.
All I can say is that Zoloft has helped me immensely. It's not for everyone, to be sure. It works for some and not for others, alas.

however, changing something about your life, or regressinng and solving the root of the problem is what needs to be done.
Good advice.

i definently agree.
however i have battled depression for several years, maybe 8 now. i have gone through my own soul-searching in an attempt to find my problems and overcome them, but the thing is that i don't find any problems. i have a few here and there, but who doesn't? but these wouldn't account for how dreadful i feel.
i have temporary success in my own ways but the feelings return like always. and i act irrationally and sad when i know i shouldn't
this is the final test for me. i'm testing these waters, and i wanted to see what you guys thought first
