coolmist/ultrasonic humdifier enough?
    #778720 - 07/26/02 03:39 PM (21 years, 7 months ago)

I was thinking of redoing my current terrarium (perlight set-up and fanning for air exchange) so it is more hands off and I have a question about the coolmist and ultrasonic humidifiers.

First of all, I went and checked out the cool mist and ultrasonic humidifiers and when I put my hand over the part where it blows out air, it did not feel damp! It just felt like a cool fan. Now I know that it is blowing water particles but it does not seem like it is enough.

I have a 90 Quart (58 Liter) terrarium and I want to connect either a ultra sonic or cool mist humidifier for my humidity instead of having perlite for humdity.

Will a coolmist/ultrasonic humdifier be enough for humidity? Which is better for cakes, cool mist or ultrasonic? Should there be a small hole with polyfill near the bottom of my terrarium so CO2 can escape?

My biggest concern is that the humidifiers will not supply enough humidity for my terrariums. Can someone help a newb at terrariums?

Get the ultrasonic humidifier, the water particles are minute and will not case the casing layer to seal. Do not run it all day though. Heres a good way my friend uses.
Put about a two inch mat of perlite down in the bottom of the terrerium.
Now Turn on the humidifier until the fog covers the entire airspace of the container. It only will take a minute or so. Then cut it off, do this twice daily, and you will do fine. Keep a humidity gauge anyhow. Ultrasonics can if your not careful supersaturate the casing, so just a couple of minutes aday will suffice.bluhoney

Not sure, but you can kill pinns by letting the water accumulate on the cake. Just keep an eye on them, if you can see moisture beads on the cakes, back off on the humidifier some, still use the ultrasonic though, get the cool mist ultrasonic, it helps in iniciating fruiting by cooling the air as well as humidity.bluhoney

hrm... well I was doing a search on the forums and found that the Vick's Cool Mist Humidifier was pretty popular with people.

So, I am thinking of setting up a Vick's Cool Mist Humidifier (or a similar cool mist humidifer)

So now I have a few more questions...
1. How long should I keep the humidifier on for? Shroomgod's tek says to keep it on 24/7 but I have seen people posting that they keep it on a timer and such. What is everyone's opinion who have or are using the humidifier with success....?

2. Will a Vick's Humdifier setup be enough for 2 terreriums? 3 terreriums? 4 terreriums?

One humidifier works well for my friend who has a 14X14 foot lab. It runs for 2 hours each day. The best way is to just play it by ear. keep a watch on your cakes. If moisture builds up on them, then lower your overall time humidifing. But all kinds of ways will work, thats just my friends way. Good luck in your venture keep us posted bluhoney

okay thanks.... I guess tweaking and experimenting is the best way to go... But suggesttions from people who use the Cool mist setups would be appreciated...

Well, I'll be at Wally world tomorrow buying up some supplies.

I know how what you mean about the humidifiers. I have a vicks cool mist one but havent used it yet. Still need to set it up and stuff but when I put my hand over the hose that goes into the terrain, it just feels like cool air blowing but my hygrometer is saying that the humidity is rising. Its weird though b/c after about 10 or 15 min the humidty drops down below 85 again so I will probally have to run it for 10 min every 15 min or so. I just hope that it works. The good thing about the cool mist is that is blows in fresh oxygen so I dont have to worry about fanning that crap now. Once I see pins in my casing I will be giving it a try. Shouldnt be but 3 or 4 more days before I see some pins so I cant wait.

do you mean that the humidity drops after you turn the cool mist humidifier off?

Does anyone know how large in cubic area a Vicks cool mist humidifier can support?

I did some testing with a vicks cool mist, connected to a 31 gallon container with a 5 foot hose.

93% RH was the highest I got, didnt see any water build up at all, I turned it off to see how often I would need to run it, and it stayed at 92% for 48 hours so I think it will work fairly well.

She has a hepa filter running. The intake is outside the lab, the exhaust is connected to the inside, so fresh air is pumped in and old air pumped out through out the day. bluhoney

I?ve been borrowing my ultrasonic from my landlord, and now he needs it back. Now I will buy a new humidifier, but if I have to choose one type, should I go with the ultrasonic or the cool mist???\
I have a terrarium of 35 gallons or so.

If you have to choose between the two, go with the cool mist humidifier.

Cool mist is for air exchange.

Ultrasonic is for humidity.

For just cakes, go with a PMP.

Sound advice. The PMP is one of the best innovations to come from the Shroomery (along with the TiT and Martha)...Magash is my hero.

PMP stands for Poor Man's Pod...do a search for it, it's a Magash fruiting chamber.

yeah i would suggest against an ultrasonic alone.. its kinda of a bitch to get all set up for 24/7 operation.. I woulda returned mine for a cool mist if i hadnt pitched the box  :frown:

so, cool mist just right and for most situations or without a decent amount of modification, ultrasonic too much.
