I was thinking of planting the seeds in the pot holder base first. and then when things sprout move it over to the larger pot??? I'm sorry i'm retarted. Any advice. am i doing it all wrong? or should this work out just fine?

Isn't there a bit much nutes for cacti seedlings in Miracle Gro? And I think that when it's time to move the seedlings you'll wanna move them into a rather wide container or one for each. They start to grow really quick once they get to that size.

u could always cut the miracle grow 50/50 with grit & sand... it would work ok, but cactus mix would be preferable

oh and u know to keep them in very high humidity for germination and the first month or two, right? a plastic pot would be better for that...

Making a mix of 50% potting soil, 25% sand, and 25% perlite would work. Should be watered before planting seeds. With a fine layer of sand on top to level out the surface and keep seeds from falling down cracks, then the seeds sprinkled out evenly, then maybe a very fine layer of sand on top of the seeds. I find it helps them root better and not fall over, also helps keep them in contact with moisture to encourage sprouting. Then a light misting to ensure the surface is wet and cover with saran wrap and a rubber band. Put underneath a light or somewhere that is warm and receives bright light.
A plastic pot is better for seedlings, keeps the moisture in. Seedlings in drier conditions grow MUCH slower. Terra cotta is better for larger cacti.
Good luck.

i wouldn't use the pot bottom thingy, its too shallow. they may not be fast at first, but its good to let them stretch their roots as much as possible, untouched/bothered.

just drill lots of holes in the bottom for good drainage. For the soil I use 1.5 parts sifted sterile organic compost with 1 part course sand and .5 part perlite and a teaspoon of lime. Scatter seeds on soil and water
I just sowed some Frailea astroides last night I'm really excited about.
good luck with the torch seeds.

i just put an inch of perlite at the bottom, then an inch of potting soil mixed with perlite and sand, then fine sand on the top, i press seeds into the sand. and mist daily, i remove husks as they come off. husks can mold. i keep them in a large ziplock until they are quite well rooted, otherwise fungus gnats will eat the roots off. soil should be baked first ALWAYS. you get even ONE fungus gnat and you better be ready to graft everything, because you wont have roots. Heres my current project.
