Well this is my first post and might I say this site is fantastic. Few questions, Firstly:
I am looking for a legal, easy to obtain, edible mushroom that can be grown using the cubensis cake method. Any suggestions? Practice makes perfect...
*no advice or help is allowed on obtaining spores where it is illegal to do so*
Cheers, Gen

shiitake grows on pf cakes you change the verm to woodchips and you don't dump the cakes instead you top them off with water once and a while cuz shiitakes grow huge a shiitake mushroom contains more moisture than a cake does :P

Buy cultures/prints/syringes from shroomery sponsores. you can buy cubensis prints from here too (as long as its legal in your country/state/city if its not dont even ask around for them) http://www.shroomery.org/sponsors.php
Check out the FAQ http://www.shroomery.org/forums/faq2.php
And when in doubt use the search there is TONS of info on these forums http://www.shroomery.org/forums/search.php

Cheers flavoraid, I shall do a little more research on this. I was thinking either shiitake or enoki but havn't seen anything on cake growing. Now you have put me on the right path.
*no advice on how to obtain spores where it is illegal to do so* Cheers, Gen

Well your not allowed to ask for spores if it is illegal for you to receive them (site rules) but a spore print is flat and can fit in any envelope

change the vermiculite to sawdust not woodchips because woodchips would be a pain in the ass to fit into jars lol.
cheers,

Oyster and lion's mane will grow on standard pf cakes, as will shiitake, but they'll all three to a bit better if you substitute sawdust for vermiculite. Add one tablespoon of gypsum for each five cakes. There's several threads in the gourmet forum on using pf cakes for edibles. Here's one http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/6748848#Post6748848
The search posts feature at the top of this page will find several more. RR

With edibles, you might try to get a liquid culture rather than spores. You will get much faster results.

Shiitake shrooms have white spores yes? I can make a spore print the same way as you would with a cube? I was sussing out shiitake's when I was in the super market just before, they look old and crusty, what are the chances of getting a good print off them? (I am cheap and I can eat them when I am done, lol), Gen

You really wanna make sure EVERYTHING is sterile when taking a spore print. I wouldn't trust the ones from the market.

Lol, if the shrooms are contaminated then all the sterilization in the world wont help. Do people sterilize foil for prints? If so is it just a case of boiling the crap out of it then letting cool as to not kill the spores? Gen
